Natural Birth

Found a doula, yay! And recommendations on classes

I interviewed someone based on a recommendation from a friend and she is really sweet, I think we will work with her! She's younger than I thought - maybe mid 20's and she's never had kids but she's been a doula for a while and has all the certifications, she's also working on her lactation consultant cert too. She is very down to earth and I felt like I gelled with her on a personal level.

She also had some good advice about classes - I had mixed thoughts about the various methodologies - she said Bradley is very dependent on a partner as coach model and she doesn't like it for that reason (partly because it doesn't work for single moms, and because most 1st time dads are just as nervous if not more, than the moms so what's the point), she said hypno is nice, but you have to really buy into it for it to work, so she recommended Lamaze. I was worried it would be really old fashioned and have that hee hee hee hoo hoo hoo breathing bull but she said they updated it now (no more silly breathing) and it's a very good natural birth primer.

I feel like I'm really on my way now!

Re: Found a doula, yay! And recommendations on classes

  • I have a doula as well, I don't think I personally would hire a doula who didn't have kids, there is just a bond there that I want to remain between us. My doula focuses on the Birthing From Within aspect. It's amazing and it involves all other classes like Lamaze and Bradley, so it's the best of both. My doula actually runs the class so we already have a wonderful relationship. Congrats on finding a doula you feel comfortable with, sometimes that's hard to come by...

  • I also picked a doula who had given birth (four times!). Also, I am older than dirt so felt I would be more comfortable with an older woman. I think I found her -- we are meeting tonight.

  • I think it's great that you found a doula you like, but I've had my sister and a friend both use a childbirth educator/doula that hadn't given birth before and both were very underprepared (their words after the fact, not mine).  Both my friend and sister are big advocates to using someone who has giving birth (naturally) to provide support and education.

That being said, I'm surprised your doula doesn't like Bradley b/c although it is husband-focused, it really just relies on having a supportive birth team and a doula is actually really advocated and loved in those classes.  I also think a combo of hypnobirthing, bradley, and other forms of relaxation like lamaze are needed, so I'm not sure the combo of lamaze and a doula who hasn't experienced birth herself would be what I would want for my first birth.  But I really don't know since I haven't had any friends/family use lamaze - almost all have used hypnobirthing/babies, bradley, and Birthing-from-Within.

  • You don't hear anything on here about Lamaze, you will have to keep us posted!  Yay for finding a doula you connect with!
