Salicylic acid

Has anybody used this or are using products with salicylic acid right now?   My acne is so gross and out of control, I've been using Clean & Clear face lotion which contains salicylic acid.  I've tried Googling it, but am getting mixed results.  Should I stop using it?  What is everyone else doing to control their acne?  Ugh, I feel so ugly.

Re: Salicylic acid

  • I've heard alot of people stop using it but I still am. I know other people who used it while pregnant and they didn't have any problems.

My OB had no problem with this but I asked first. FWIW, I used neutrogena (I normally don't use this brand) and for whatever reason it worked wonders on my skin... nothing else would. I'd check with your OB, JIC.

  • I've always been told you should avoid using anything with any kind of acid in it. I believe you can use products with peroxide though.

  • Its basically aspirin. Since Im already on a baby aspirin I avoided throughout my pregnancy.

Whatever amount you get is going to be tiny, but its worth an ask I guess

  • I still use it, but I try not to use it daily which has been easy since my skin type has totally changed since the pregnancy. I also searched it and the mixed reviews were a huge reason why I decided to cut down. That and my skin kinda made it necessary to cut down. My skin used to be really oily and I would break out easily, but now it's pretty dry. Since it's so dry I've been skipping my facial cleanser and just using it every other day or as needed to combat the little bit of oil that does accumulate in between washings. Once I get to go to a doctor, I'll ask them just in case though.

  • I use clean and clear but have never had many acne problems until getting pregnant. I feel like a teenager again breaking out all the time. Even on my chest inbetween my breasts. So irritating.

I use a Clean and Clear moisturizer with .5% in it.

  • I'm still using it. My skin is so bad since being PG it's out of control. I use the clinique acne line and I think as long as it's not excessive I feel ok. My dr. didn't say anything but I have an appt with a dermatologist in a few weeks since it's that bad. Keep in mind it's topical too, you aren't ingesting it like aspirin which someone mentioned they avoided.
  • My dermatologist told me I have to stop using all acne medications during pregnancy...  My OB even recommended against it.  So I stopped....  And concealer is my best friend. (c:
  • I just googled it and it is not considered safe.  Darn it, I just started using some face scrub with this stuff...  Time to find something else.

  • there are so many mixed reviews about it. i asked my OB and she said that it was perfectly fine. That and bezoyl peroxide was ok with her. but other than that she said stay away from everything but those 2. i had stopped using it because i heard it was bad but my OB told me i could use it. i dont use it every day i just use it a few times a week as a percaution.

  • my dr said not to use salicylic acid but benzoyl peroxide was ok
  • Sounds like there are some really mixed opinions on this. My doctor said that it was okay so I've still been using face wash with it.

  • My doctor told me that anything like that isn't enough for your body to absorb and cause problems.  I'm avoiding all those spot treatments with anything like it, but I've been using Clean and Clear foaming face wash and thankfully it's not in the ingredients.  I've never been able to be 100% acne free, but this stuff helps and I find that pregnancy is helping it more...if it would just go away from my jaw line it'd be fine, lol.
  • I have been using La Roche-Posay EffacLar Duo for spot treatments, and wow - it helps. It is pricey at around $36/tube, but one tube easily lasts me 2 months, and OB and RE gave it the okay. It has 5.5% Benzoyl peroxide and 0.4% LHA. For face wash, I use the Purifying foam gel cleanser from the same line. I love it, and they carry it at CVS. Highly recommend if you need to clear up stubborn acne spots.

    * I will mention the duo cream can be drying. I use it sparingly and use Clinque's moisture gel daily in addition to organic Jojoba oil from Trader Joes.
