Pre-School and Daycare

Do I send DS for 2 or 3 days of preschool?

I have a DS who is now 2years, 4 months old. I am also expecting a baby girl in July. DS is very active and is craving to socialize with other kids. I know putting him in pre school is good for him but 3 days a week (2.5 hours a day) would be $60.00 more a month. 2 days a week is also 2.5 hours a day but only $140.00 a month or $60.00 less than the cost of $200 for 3 days. He will be doing afternoons because I want to keep him with the Early intervention in the am at home. What are your thoughts? I need to decide soon.

Since he gets EI, can you get the program to put him in a SN Integrated preschool?

We are in the process of finding out if he qualifies. I also want to see the environment. may not be something I'm comfortable with him being in. He is not autistic or has aspergers, speech seems to be the main delay.

I know in our area, the children have to be 3 and out of EI to qualify for the integrated preschool (my DD finished EI on her 3rd bday but I send her to a regular preschool). I think 2 days is plenty for a 1st year....especially since he'll have another 2 years following. My girls will have 3 years of preschool. They started this year with 2 days and will move to 3 next year. Good luck.
  • I might lean towards the 3 days a week, just for the extra socialization (and break for me, to be honest). DS started pre-school last fall at 3.5 years old, and it's a "delay"  based pre-school (DS had a severe speech delay when he started). It's 4 mornings a week, which is a lot when you are just starting, but DS adjusted perfectly well and loves school. Also, his language has exploded since September.

  • EI will end once your DS turns 3 so personally I wouldn't consider the EI schedule...I would more consider the schedule of what you would like for the fall (I may be misunderstanding the timing of when you want your son to start preschool - I'm reading it as you'd like to start him soon vs the fall).

In regards to a developmental/special needs preschool if he only qualifies for speech then you may be able to pick whatever school you want and just take him to the speech therapy wherever it is located. Just depends on how your school district runs their special needs preschool.

Does the additional $60/month for the 3day school fit into your budget? If not, then you have your answer and have him go to the 2day school. Personally, if you can swing the extra $60 and he wants to socialize then I'd put him in the 3day program.

  • OP, how many times are you going to ask this question? Did you not like the answers you got the first time?

I'm sure there is not a huge difference between 2 or 3 days a week. Whatever you choose will be fine, I'm sure.

Some people do not click on certain boards or do not log on for a week or two so they miss the post. Is that OK?

I see that I might have hit submit twice ... ooops ... so I made a typo ... shame on me! LOL

  • I started my girls in a 2 day a week program, but it was because of the cost. Since I have twins, 2x the price, with a 10% discount. So right now I pay $340 a month for the 2 of them. After we started and they loved it so much, I really wish I could have been able to do the 3x a week, but it would have been $400 for the month for both of them and that was just too much with me being a SAHM.

If you can afford to do it then I would probably put him in the 3 day a week program, if the money is an issue then stick with the 2 day a week program. My only issue with the 2 day a week program was in the beginning only going on Tues. and Thurs. there is 4 days between when the go to class on Thurs. and then go back again the following Tues. and this would cause issues with my one that was more clingy. The 3x a week would have probably been better since it would be MWF. But after a couple of months she got into the schedule and it was not a problem anymore.

I was very happy with 2 mornings the 1st yr and 3 mornings the 2nd year. Plus my oldest attended speech though the town at one of our local schools. It was a lot of driving with three kids (a newborn, 21 month old and my preschooler). I really enjoyed having him home with us too! My middle son was accepted into the towns integrated preschool for his speech delay. He has no other issues. He loves the program and is there 4 mornings a week, next year he would be there 5 afternoons a week. Tat program is free (well, we pay taxes for this reason) for us since he needs the services, otherwise he would have gone to the same church preschool as my oldest. I will only be putting my youngest in 2 mornings a week in 2013. This was also a financial decision as well, 3 morning costs a bit more.
