Sorry it's taken me a while to write this. I don't have much time right now! Little guy is a lot of work, but he's such a blessing and I don't mind it at all.
It all started..... Midnight of March 17th, I was getting ready for bed when I felt my first contraction. I've had many contractions in the weeks leading up to then, but I knew this was different. It hurt a lot more! The contractions then quickly went to 10 minutes to 8 etc. By 5am, the contractions were 5-6 minutes apart. I was still doubting whether this was the real thing. The last thing I wanted was to get my hopes up and then L & D send me home. So I started walking around and then they dropped to every three minutes.
I got DH up and told him we needed to go. I let him sleep through the night while I labored because I knew I needed him to have strength and be the coherent one that day haha. He was pretty surprised and started running around like crazy. It was cute.
Fast forward to L & D, I was in triage for an hour where they confirmed that I was indeed progressing. They sent us to our own room, sweet! We were so excited that this was the real thing. Once I got set up in the room, my contractions spaced out to 5 minutes apart, so pitocin was started to get them back on track. Wow did that suck! They started pitocin in the expectation that I would have an epidural soon. Well, the anesthesiologist didn't show up for almost two hours! I was 5cm by then and my water broke when the nurse did an exam. The epidural was awesome. I felt the contractions and the pressure from Ryan's descent but not any real pain.
Things were going well until the nurse noticed that Ryan's heartbeat dropped rather significantly with every contraction. She was thinking he was clamping down on his umbilical cord. It was enough to warrant an oxygen mask for the rest of labor. Ryan seemed to respond well to it. I was so afraid that I would have to get a c section if this kept happening but thankfully his heartbeat always went right back up.
I was progressing really fast, a centimeter an hour, sometimes every half hour. By the time the OB came in around 3ish, he confirmed I was completely dilated. He told me to labor down for a while to get Ryan lower. The nurse then put me in this crazy position to help gravity make his descent quicker and easier for him to maneuver. Can I just say that It was so uncomfortable! I was really aware of how low he was, and the pressure with every contraction made me grab the bed rails to power through them.
After about half an hour, our nurse had me start pushing. It actually felt good to push against the pressure. The nurse had me push three times for 10 seconds with each contraction. It was really tiring but I used imagery to help me through. I'm a long distance runner, and when I would get to 7 or 8 seconds of the set when I was really tired, I would imagine I was running up a hill and near the top. Most people, when they see the top of a hill, they let up and slow down because they are tired and relieved when they see it. I always tried to "kick" at the crest instead. So instead of letting up at the end of each set, I pushed harder.
After 40 minutes of pushing, the nurse told me we would do one more set of pushing and then she would call the doc. Well, that last push turned out to be the very last one of the entire labor. As I started the push, she told me to stop, I told her I couldn't. I really did try. Well, Ryan just came out. Like flying out, his entire body. She dropped my leg and jumped on my bed to grab him. I pretty sure he hit the bed first because no one was there. I didn't even realize he was out at the time. I was really confused. Right then a swarm of nurses and the OB ran in and took over. I tore pretty good from the crazy pushing.
Ryan was also whisked away quickly. It turns out he was covered in meconium. The dips in heart rate were from all the meconium, not from any umbilical cord issues. It took them a while to get it all out of his body. Once he was cleaned up, we realized that his hair was tinted a slight green from it. It was pretty odd and funny - appropriate for St. Paddys Day.
He turned out healthy and weighed in at 6 lbs 12 oz at 19 1/2 inches long born at 4:42pm on St. Paddys Day. He is a peanut! We were predicting he would be closer to 8 lbs. It was kind of cool how delivery happened, it was just me, DH, and our kick ass nurse. It was pretty intimate and unexpected the way everything transpired. .
I want to thank you ladies. You all helped me so much during this pregnancy. I was so scared and nervous a lot of time, but being able to voice these concerns in a supportive community made all the difference. If its ok, I will continue to lurk and hopefully still give support to you all. This was my home for nine months and I dont want to cut all ties. Thank you again ![]()
Without further ado, here is my little guy. Words can't describe the love I have for him. It's overwhelming.
