When should I watch for a concussion?

Maybe this is a dumb question and the answer is "every time" but when should I be worried that DD could have suffered a concussion? We paid close attention after she fell out if her high chair and landed face first on the hardwood (I don't know, I think that kinda trumps all the couch falls everyone's always posting about...) but how about when she just threw herself back and smacked her head on the changing table while I was getting her dressed? She cried of course but calmed down pretty quickly and is now playing in her crib before falling asleep, same as every morning.

I would say anytime they hit their head keep a look out for anything abnormal.  It's such a pain at this age through the toddler years I think.  My little daredevil seems to hit her head once a week no matter how well I am watching her.

  • Just keep an eye on her and make sure she's acting normally.  If she starts acting "funny" call the pedi.  Ty hit his head really badly last monday, ironically about 15 minutes before leaving for the dr., and once I calmed him down we left but I checked in on him every minute of the drive I felt like.  I was terrified and I mentioned it to the doctor and he asked how he was acting.  He was super clingy in the waiting room, but by the time we got to the exam room he started perking up like his normal self.  Since we were there Dr checked his eyes and said all looked fine but just keep an eye out for abnormal behavior and call if he starts acting funny.

And, probably not the best advice, but for ease of mind just check in on her frequently while she's sleeping!  I did with Ty and that was the only thing to keep me sane.

  • Yeah this age is tough. Rylee falls and hits her head almost daily now, and I just can't seem to move fast enough. If they cry right away (or watch you to see how you react and then cry like my drama queen does lol) and are easily soothed that's a good thing. Obviously, loss of consciousness is bad. Signs that something may be wrong are : lethargy (not just at nap time), inconsolable crying, vomiting, loss of appetite, bruising/swelling at injury site (more than a small bruise and/or little bump). You know your child best. If you see changes that don't seem right to you after a fall, call your pedi.

  • My husband a serious concussions playing college football and I know it is not exactly the same as with babies. From our experiences strange behavior is the biggest thing to look out for. He actually hugged a player from the other team after his biggest concussion. Also sensitivity to light; I know its hard to determine that on babies!
