BFing and top front teeth

DD has had her bottom front teeth for a couple of months now and I haven't had any issues with them and BFing. I barely feel them because her tongue covers them up. She just got one of her top front teeth a few days ago, though, and I have a small cut on my left nipple that HURTS only while she's nursing. I think it was from her tooth rubbing against the skin. I think her latch is okay now because it doesn't hurt as much when she nurses on my right side; I think the left side is just taking a little while to heal. Her tooth is like a little dagger.

If the top teeth bothered you at all during BFing, did you find that it got better with time? I really would like to do extended BFing and am still planning on it, but I'm just hoping that over time, maybe my skin will get used to the teeth or something??

  • Had the same thing happen. It got better as soon as DS got used to having top teeth. I think they instinctively know teeth and nipples do not mesh well.

All of my other babies realized this, and adapted, but DS3 has not.  He only has the two bottom middle teeth, but he forgets every now and then and bites down!  OUCH!

  • The top center 2 teeth weren't so bad for us.  It was the two that flank the center ones that were complete hell.  My nipples were shredded, and I sobbed during every feeding.  It lasted about 10 days, but eventually she adjusted her latch and I healed.  Put some Neosporin on the cuts between feedings and over night.  It's the only thing that made BF'ing somewhat tolerable for me during that time, and having it on overnight for a long stretch sped up healing time.  I've heard you don't have to wipe it off before BF'ing, but I always did.  GL and hang in there!

  • Em's got her 2nd top teeth and the front ones are slowly coming in. It's been a little painful lately but I have noticed it getting better. Hope it does for you as well!

  • K has four top teeth coming in right now (three broke through this week, one on its way). It hasn't had a major impact on nursing, but she has bitten me several times this week...very painful. She got me a few times when the bottom teeth were coming in too. But, it stopped shortly thereafter. So, I'm hoping it just takes time to adjust. I tense up when she latches on now for fear she'll get me with one of those new teeth.
