Give me your opinion on our name choices...please

I think we have our names picked out but I'm wondering if one of them is just a little too out there. I don't like traditional, common names so that is okay with me but I don't want her to hate it.

Both our grandma's middle name is Darlene. They are both very special women to us and my husband's grandma passed away when we were going through IVF. I don't like the name Darlene but are thinking of using just Lene instead. So, the name would be Sienna Lene.

The other name is Kaydence Jo. Jo is my middle name and I was really trying to avoid passing that on but my husband is begging. He has called me Miss Jo since we started dating and he wants a Little Miss Jo.

So, tell me what you think. I can handle harsh opinions. Thanks!

  • I like both names.  If you really don't like Jo you could change it up a little to Joy, Joanne, etc.  Your husband could still have his Little Miss Jo but you wouldn't be passing on a name you dislike.  But I'd also be careful about putting a long middle name with Kaydence if your last name is long.  My name was Melissa Margaret Schxxxxxxxxx before I got married.  It was quite a mouthful for a little kid and it NEVER fit on school forms.

  • I like the names OK, but would go with the spelling "Cadence" instead of "Kaydence." The unnecessary K is a little Kardashian to me. Love the middle names having family significance, though!

  • I love both names too!!!  My middle name is Darlene and I've always hated it.  Everyone else likes it though...or maybe they lie:))  I love your twist on it though!!!  Lene is very cute yet sophisticated at the same time!!!  I'm also shortening my grandmother's middle name from Mabile to Mae.   Mae is also my other grandmother's middle name, but she died before I was born so I was never able to meet her, but I inherited her antique coat which fit me perfectly and not my mother or either of my two other sisters.  So I still feel a special connection to her...

I've had serious problems coming up with another "special" family middle name for the other twin....as having two was very unexpected for us....

I tend to agree. She will have to explain how to spell it for the rest of her life. If you go with Cadence, most people know how to spell that.  Sorry to be blunt but I did want to be honest. :)

Thank you so much everyone for your opinions! For some reason I hate the traditional spelling of Kaydence. I understand spending your whole life explaining how to spell your name since mine is Lyndsey. But of course, I appreciate your opinion and I asked for honesty so don't worry about offending me. I'm happy to hear you guys don't think Lene is too out there.

  • I would personally use the full name Darlene.  Lene by itself doesn't look like it's pronounced "lean" and if I hear "lean" all I think of is lean ground beef or something.

We also use middle names to honor someone and I love that idea.  The reality is, after the child is born, no one uses their middle name, so it's not like you'll hear it all the time.

    Just my two cents.

  • LOVE your names but I may be a little biased : )! Our girls names are Kaydence and Brooklyn. My dh has always loved the name but I didn't like the traditional spelling at all either. Good luck!

Totally agree with the spelling thing. I like "Cadence" better. I like the middle names (and I think "Jo" is cute). I like the idea of using your grandmother's name and your middle name (I used my grandmother's first name, and my middle name for my twins' middle names). I don't like Darlene, but Lene is cute. I would do that for sure. The only problem is the pronunciation of "Lene." If I didn't know it was derived from Darlene, I'm not sure I would know how to pronounce it. That being said, I don't know how else you would spell it, and it is only a middle name. It's not like people really have a need to say your whole name anyway!

  • I just don't like te middle names but I get why you chose them. Lene is odd I'd go with Darlene, no one uses middle names anyway.
  • I agree that it's better to go with the more traditional spelling of cadence...but you don't, and guess what , u win!!  Haha

I think lene is cute (also for the familial significance), however, if there is a pronunciation problem how about Leni?  Still utilizing the name but with a modern twist for a girl!

    Good luck!

This was my first thought too but then it grew on me. I'm leaning against it right now but that could change at any time. I wish my Grandma had a prettier first name. Its Doneta and she hates it herself. I also don't want anything too long since my last name is 8 letters. And to the poster that suggested Leni. I really like that (other than we have a horse named that) but I just don't think it sounds right with Sienna. I guess its back to the drawing board. Thank you everyone for your thoughts! I'm just so darn excited to have 2 little girls, I guess it won't matter too much what we call them. Big Smile

  • Super cute first names, but I agree with pp about the spelling of Kaydence.  That's a long name for a kid to learn to spell and write.  I would go with Kadence or Cadence instead.  I also don't care for the name Jo in any part of a name, but I totally get the familial significance.  Love Sienna for a first name and Lene is nothing I have heard before but it's not awful. Good luck! :)

I suggest shortening Doneta to Etta as a MN, then, instead of shortening Darlene to Lene. But I'm biased, one of my girls is going to be Etta Jane after my grandmother LeaEtta and my husband's great grandmother Jane.

  • I like Sienna. I also don't mind the mn Jo.

Lene is NMS, I would go with Darla instead. I have never been a fan of the name Cadence, and don't like the 'K' and 'Y' thrown in either. Sorry.
