Moms of crawlers and other movers

So, what do you think? Do you ever have moments when you wish they would just stay in one place again?

I find it so exciting for Mason to learn new things, but everyone tells me to hope he doens't start crawling (scooting, etc) for as long as possible. I know that it is going to happen when it happens, but I am just curious as to what you all are feeling. Are these just cranky parents or is it so true?

I don't think that we are close to crawling, but he is starting to squirm his way around more and more every day.

Re: Moms of crawlers and other movers

  • So true. He hates confinement (like his play pen). If he's not busy pulling DVDs out of the shelves, pressing buttons on the DVD player, chasing the dog or cat, getting in the pet dishes, trying to crawl onto the dog bed ect.... It's very tiring. Exciting, sure but I miss my baby lump ;-)

  • Overall, it's not true. I'm excited that she can move and be a little more independent, because it suits her personality and she is clearly so happy to get places on her own. She tried for it early, and would get visibly frustrated that she couldn't move. So I'm happy for her.

But it is kind of true. Chasing after a crawler can be exhausting. In all fairness, I never once took the "not mobile" stage for granted. When she showed signs of wanting to move early, I was bummed. I knew I had it good while she was just laying around and I knew I didn't have much time before that changed.

It's not the end of the world though. Chasing her and pulling her out of the corner for the umpteenth time can get old but I just remember that at some point, she will be happy to focus on something and play in one place for awhile. She won't be this curious baby that has to squeeze herself into every small crevice she sees forever :)

  • DS started army crawling yesterday and I was in no hurry for him to be a mover! It is a lot harder now since he is always touching his sisters toys, which causes some whining from DD. It is exciting, but I do wish he would stay in one place still!

  • I have a baby lump who prefers to be carried around, and I am grateful for it. I am also really jealous and impressed with all of you ladies who can look at it all so positively. I just get sad when I see so many of the July babies on the move. They are just growing up so, so fast. (End of Debbie Downer vent)
  • Saoirse just started scooting and looking like she might crawl soon and it's kind of a pain in the a$$. I have to change the way I do everything because I can no longer count on her to be in the same place I put her when I turn my back for a moment.

That being said, I am really proud of her learning new things and so happy for her that she is becoming more independent. It actually made me sad when she was a newborn that she could not do anything for herself. It still makes me a bit sad to look at her and see how helpless she is. She doesn't get to choose where she goes or what she eats, when she naps or what toys she plays with. She has to do what I want her to do and can't even tell me what her needs are. I actually can't wait until she can speak and let me know what she wants, or walk and go where she wants to be. Obviously that comes with it's own struggles and fights, but it makes me really sad when she is helpless.

  • I'm torn. I think the mobility does make her happier (she doesn't cry when she gets on her tummy anymore, she just sits up or crawls somewhere)... which is nice for mom and dad too!

But yeah, it's different. Like others, I wish I could set her down and she stays in one place.

I guess now looking at it I prefer happy mobile baby over cranky stuck in one place baby.

  • Nick's not crawling yet, but I thought life was actually MUCH better once he could scoot.

  • No crawling here yet either.  Andrew is scooting a bit though.  I am excited to see him crawl, but also can wait for it.  Im in no hurry to run around after him.

I would see how it is much more difficult to chase them around.

  • Yeah, it's really fun but also tiring. The most tiring/frustrating thing for me is diaper & clothing changes. I had to stop using the changing table a few weeks ago because it was just not safe anymore. So now we change her on the floor, and literally the instant you lay her down, she's flipped over and darting away. So I end up dressing her in all these weird positions, and pretty often I'm satisfied with just snapping 1 snap on a onesie. I'm also happy that the weather's warmer so that pants can be optional.

But I love watching her decide what to do and then go do it! It's so much fun. It's sweet too how she'll follow me out of a room, crawl over to me and pull herself up on my pants.

ETA: In a way she entertains herself a lot more now that she can move around and play with different things. She loves to stand at the coffee table and play with a toy or just bat the table itself! For some reason the same old toys are a lot more fun when she's standing and playing with them.

  • I just hope we stick with crawling for awhile, my oldest was walking independently at 10 months, running at her first birthday party and scaling her high chair.  She's pretty fast at crawling though so its pretty cute because she grunts when she spots something she really wants and is crawling after it (usually the dog).

All of this! Yeah it's a pain to put her in her jumper or walker when I need to run to the bathroom. But it is so amazing seeing her discover new things while she roams around the house.

  • Blake has been crawling for a couple weeks now. My husband and I were just talking about this last night. When he was first born we couldn't wait until he would roll over, sit up on his own or crawl. Now that he is doing all of those things I miss when he would stay in the same place I left him.

Our house is set up so I can see the dining room and living room from the kitchen sink. If I put Blake on the floor in the living room with his toys, he is through the dining room and into the kitchen sink almost as fast as I am. I miss the days when he didn't move around much but I love how happy it makes him to explore and get into everything!

  • My little guy just started crawling and it is exhausting!  He is into EVERYTHING he can get his little fingers on!

  • Seriously. Ruby has been crawling since she was 5 mos. old and now she is really fast! It's hard to keep up with her. We had to install gates just to keep her in check. Of course, she likes to pull herself up on the gate and then fall over and bonk her head on it, but I guess that's another thread...

  • Nothing has prepared me for being the mom of a crawler. The little bugger is quick too! I just wish I could keep her still for diaper changes. I've started changing her on the floor so she won't fall off the table, and frequently have to yell for H to help me as the naked baby speed crawls down the hallway.
