Leaving Wedding Rings on or off?

I am 34 weeks pregnant and it is getting warmer out, so I am noticing my rings are having a hard time coming off throughout the day. I really don't want to take them off and was hoping to keep them on during the entire pregnancy (even if I couldn't get them off at one point). I don't feel like they are digging into my skin or anything, but could it get to that point?

Do most people take them off until after the baby or keep them on even if you can't get them off at some point?

And, no, i don't have a cheap alternate ring to wear in its place. :)

Just wanted to get thoughts and others point of view from experience.

Re: Leaving Wedding Rings on or off?

  • Mine are still on hehe I always take mine off when I take a shower so I'll keep wearing it until the day comes that it takes a little more effort to get it off.  Then I'll just leave it off but so far I haven't had any swelling....I've had every other pregnancy symptom in the book though lol I still get m/s a couple times a week...oh fun! • We got warmer weather over the weekend and I felt more comfortable taking mine off to be on the safe side. I will most likely leave them off for the duration.

  • I would def take them off if they are starting to get tight and if you dont whatever you do do not leave them on for labor...they almost always give you an IV which will make you super swollen for a few days. maybe put them on a necklace and where them that way?
  • I am 37 weeks pregnant and my wedding ring is stayin' on. It is still loose on my finger and comes off really easy. I figure if you can get it off and on without too much trouble, you can leave it on. However, if it takes a lot of effort to get it off, take it off. I believe I had to do that with my first pregnancy but not my second (my current pregnancy). It probably helps that I had to use tape or something to make my ring smaller in the beginning of my pregnancy. I actually don't mind that I don't need to put the tape on it anymore and didnt' have the ambition to resize it. lol

  • When I was pregnant with DD, my fingers swelled up so bad (around 30-32 weeks I think?) I had to have my rings cut off by a jeweler. I tried every single trick to get them off myself but nothing worked and my finger was starting to lose circulation. Good times!

So pretty much as soon as I found out I was pregnant this time, I ditched the rings just to be safe. I did put them on when we had our maternity pictures taken a few weeks ago, and ironically they were practically falling off from being too loose. So I guess I'm just destined to not wear them while pregnant! haha
  • I'm only at 28 weeks, but I've been wondering the same thing. My rings have always gotten a little tighter in the heat (which makes sense), but they're definitely loose enough on my finger that I'm not at all uncomfortable and even have about a millimeter of space between the rings and my finger. I'm a FTM so I have no idea how my body reacts to pregnancy in terms of swelling, but I'm hoping that I can keep them on the whole time... Of course, at the same time I'm worried that one day they'll just suddenly be too tight and I'll be in trouble, but I also don't want to take them off when I won't necessarily have to either. I guess I'll push my luck a little further and see what happens?

  • I was wearing mine up until this past weekend when the weather got hot.  My engagement ring still fits, but I am so claustrophobic that the thought of them getting stuck freaks me out.  I wouldn't take a chance, so I would probably take them off.
  • It never really got "cold" here...I had to take my rings off around 24 weeks.  I did a lot of walking on our treadmill during this pregnancy and my hands would swell so bad from being hot that I just had to take them off.

I would suggest taking them off now while you can since you are getting closer to the end.  You don't want them to get stuck then have to be cut off.  I woke up a couple weeks ago and thought I better take my toe rings off and I could only get 1 off!  In a matter of 1 day my toes swelled to little sausage toes and I can't get the other one off with anything!!

I have a scheduled c-sect tomorrow and they will be cutting it off at the hospital!  Stick out tongue

  • I took mine off several weeks ago and I was planning on wearing them on a chain around my neck as I did during my first pregnancy. However, I did not take into account my very curious toddler who likes to pull on any necklace that I wear! So I haven't been wearing them at all lately, which I hate! I don't really care about people judging me or anything like that, I just miss my rings :-(

  • I took mine off...its been in the high 60's here and my hands were swollen!  I didn't want them to get stuck!  :)

  • Take them off and put their somewhere safe until baby is born.  Swelling in the last 4 weeks was the worst for me the first time around... and even worse was while I was in L&D.  I weighed more when I checked OUT of the hospital than when I checked in because they pumped me so full of crap.

  • I took mine off last week and put them on a necklace. They will make you take all your jewelery off at the hospital.

Off. I've heard of lots if people having to have theirs cut off and I'm not risking it! It feels weird to have it off but it'll be on soon enough again.

  • As of right now mine are snug but fine. They were loose before pregnancy.

I never ever sleep with my rings on though because my hands tend to swell during the night. I put them on after I am done getting ready and then take them off around dinner time.

Depending on how I am feeling, I usually take them off once and awhile during the day but after I wash them with cold water and moisturize they are typically fine.

  • Mine have been off for a while. My DH insists that I wedge them on during any of the baby classes we have been taking. I just sigh and do it if I can, but sometimes I just can't. I'll probably be pressed to put them on for the baby shower and when we meet all the doctors in our practice... But honestly, I'll likely slip the ring off when he's not looking. It does NOT fit!

  • Heck, I've never had them back on since DS was born. Despite weighing less than when he was conceived, I still couldn't wear my rings almost 3 years laterSad

  • I've noticed with the heat that mine are getting tighter as well...

I figure that I will just drink tons of water and take them off when I am at home... other than that, I want to keep them on.

I figure if it gets really uncomfortable that I will wear them on a necklace. My friend who was pregnant during the summer and swelled up like Violet from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, did this.

    Not all hospitals do this.

I wore my rings all through my first pregnancy and through L&D. I'm hoping I can manage the same things time around.

  • Mine started to get a little tough to slip on and off around 28 weeks which is also when it started to get nice outside.  I took them off and put them in a safe place, i'm not risking having to get them cut off.

  • a few weeks ago i started waking up in the night and my hands would be swollen, my engagement ring cutting off the circulation in my finger. i'd take it off for the rest of the night, but put it back on in the morning. then it got harder to take off, so i stopped wearing it altogether.
my wedding band stopped fitting a long time ago.

    i say take them off.

i feel weird without them, but i'm afraid they would get stuck and i'd have to get my finger amputated or something.

  • I took all my rings off around Christmas because they were getting snug.  I got really swollen with my first pregnancy and had a hard time getting them off, so I wanted to be safe this time around & not worry about it!

  • Take them off...you can swell quickly in the last few weeks, at any time...and better to have them in a safe place then lose a finger or have to cut the ring off.

  • I took my ring off. I've been noticing some slight swelling in my fingers and my feet (we're doing very busy weeks moving into a new place and the swelling comes after each day of moving). I won't be putting them back on until post-baby or post-swelling.

I do like the idea of a cheap alternative but not the prospect of a green finger. :P

I bought a $30 silver ring last time and wear that

This is what I did also.  I'm still wearing mine but as soon as the weather gets really warm I know my hands will swell up.  If your rings are silver or gold, they can easily be cut off, but if they're platinum (mine are) it can be a real problem to cut them off so I'd rather not take the chance.

Plus, some hospitals have a 'no rings' policy for c-sections.  So, if you end up in an emergency situation, the hospital may cut them off ...

  • Definitley take them off if you're having any swelling.  I didn't take mine off and woke up a few days ago and my finger HURT. I tried everything, soap, lotion, Windex, elevation, ice, butter-everything and it just kept getting worse. I had to have my engagement ring cut off at a fire station which was heartbreaking.  They were great about it and had done it a lot but it was not fun. I left my band on because it didn't hurt as much and as soon as my finger heals (very sore from trying to get ring off and even cut up a bit) I'm going to try and get it off too. I wanted to leave mine on too for my maternity pictures in a few weeks and now I regret it, I wish I would have just taken them off when it was easy!
  • I had to take mine off at around 35 weeks, because I was noticing that they were getting harder and harder to take off, and I didn't want to have to get them cut off if they ended up getting stuck! Now I just wear them around my neck on a little chain.

I'm glad I took them off when I did, though- they were starting to make a big dent in my finger that didn't go away for about five days after I took them off!

  • Early in my pregnancy, I bought a Stella & Dot ring that I planned to use as my replacement. My goal was to wear my real ring until our belly photos (@ 29 weeks). My ring was getting a little snug after ~26 weeks. I didn't want to take any chances, so I took it off after the belly pictures. Of course, my swelling is a lot better since I've been on bedrest...but I still want to prevent needing to have the ring cut off!
