30 weeks and dying to buy for baby! I have a month until my shower, does anyone have any thoughts on items that you needed that you didn't get at your shower? What are your favorite baby items?
I stressed about this also...worried I wouldnt get a lot of things I registered for, but there really is no way to know what people will buy you for your shower. It's so unpredictable. The stuff I thought people wouldn't buy me they did and vice versa, so it all depends. That being said, I didnt really get a whole bunch of bigger items (i.e. stroller, infant car seat, swing, bottles), so I ended up looking on craigslist, ebay, using gift cards, or just buying on my own. I did get a ton of clothing and blankets, but they werent exactly my style per se so I returned some of the things I could then donated the stuff I knew were seasonal and would never fit him, or looked too girly to put on a boy. I was itching to buy stuff my whole pregnancy and despite DH complaining on how much I was spending, he's glad I did because it avoided a huge expense just before baby arrived. Plus, if there's events or consignment stores in your area, I got a lot of great name clothing for super cheap and it was so worth it.
I'd say as long as you have a mixture of big and small items on your registry for people to buy, and enough for everybody, then you should be fine. I find a majority of people either don't buy off the registry or give money/gift cards. Also, start buying clothes on your own, and maybe buy "some" of the big items to ease the load off your registry...and your pocket!
I've bought some decorations for the nursery: prints on Etsy, other wall hangings and a lamp.
Also, I didn't put most of the health
care items on my registry, so I've been stocking up on those on my
own. Things like baby acetaminophen, diapers, baby wipes, baby oil,
cotton balls, swabs, hand sanitizer (for the adults). Sure, they're not "fun" things, but baby needs them and I still think its fun to buy anything for the baby.
ETA: ewww...don't know what happened to my post...sorry about that crap at the beginning...
I didn't rely on my showers at all. I planned, budgeted and saved up for all the big ticket items ($75+). I watched the sales, bargained and negotiated to get what I wanted at a price I could live with. If I waited for my showers I wouldn't have had the benefit of some of the deals I got. No one complained about not being able to find something on my registry, there were still big items on there that I wanted but was prepared to live without, like the jumperoo which someone generously gave us.
you can buy the babies coming home outfit, I personally love the white snap front T-shirts for newborns as opposed to onesies.
I bought the stroller I wanted, my husband had a fit & didn't know what he was talking about. He was so grateful that I bought it once the baby arrived, he didn't think we would need a stroller until she was big enough to walk......... LMBO!!
I also got the stuff I wanted for her Nursery, people will kinda buy what they like versus what you like sometimes. And if you put a thousand things on your registry people will get overwhelmed.
I would say that there are a number of variables. How many people are you inviting to your shower? Do you have a large family? My experience was different from most of the pp's. I received almost all of the major items off of my registry. I do have a large family and I invited around 30 people to my shower. I had bought quite a few small things before the shower: clothes, booties, towel and washcloth set, pacifiers, etc...Also, don't forget that you'll get a completion coupon for after the shower so you can always use that to buy the items you didn't receive at a discount. I am due in May and I've already received my buy buy baby completion coupon. I am still waiting on the target one though. I've read people suggesting to move your due date/event date up so that you get the coupon sooner.
I was buying diapers and wipes and the baby wash I wanted to use. I also bought my stroller, pack N play, and decor stuff. I didn't wait for my baby shower so I could return things if I didn't need them after the baby shower. Mine wasn't until I was 35 weeks and I would have felt unprepared if I hadn't gotten as much as I did well before hand.
Good things to buy that I know I didn't get were infant pain reliever, gas drops, window shades for in the car, laundry detergent, breast pads, cups for later on, plates and silverware for later on, a booster seat, diaper rash ointment or paste, teething drops, crib sheets, and the list goes on.

If you're itching to buy something, I'd choose something like baby's going home outfit or a baby book. It's hard to wait for your shower, but it's probably preferable than needing to return duplicate items!
I was super anxious to buy for baby too before the shower, but other than stuff for the nursery I am glad I held off on buying because I got sooooooo many clothes and basically everything on both registries at my shower. The only thing I didn't get at my shower, which I was surprised about were diapers.
I didn't wait for either of my showers to buy anything-that being said I put EVERYTHING I could think of on the registry and used it more like a sanity check list for DH and I. When I bought something I took it off the registry, I found not many of my friends bought off the registry but I did get a few gift cards which will be helpful. I have a work shower today and this weekend I plan on buying anything that we have to have within the first three months this weekend, then waiting for my completion coupon for anything else.
Before our shower we bought our stroller, the diaper bag, the 3-piece furniture set, and 1 pack of onesies to reveal the gender to the ILs.
After our shower we needed to buy clothes (yes, we hardly received any clothes. It was so much fun to pick out our own baby clothes), the mattress, the video monitor, my breast pump, and the convertible rails for the bed. We also bought some smaller odds and ends.

This ended up being a great thing to have! I got a couple for my shower with DS and he loves them.
