3rd Trimester

WWYD - Induction or Wait It Out?

So, I had my 38 week appt. this morning.  I haven't progressed since last appt.; .5 cm and 50% effaced.  The dr. said she is confident that the baby isn't coming between now and next week (YES! I didn't want a Thanksgiving baby).

BUT, after a growth ultrasound last week estimated the baby to be 7.5lbs (I know they can be off by up to 1lb either way), my dr. discussed the possibility of induction around my due date with me today.  I have until next week to decide (and wait to see if any progress is made between now and then).  I have a small pelvis, so a baby that is over 9lbs at 41-42 weeks doesn't seem like that ideal situation for me.  BUT, I also don't want a failed induction either.  Anyone else in this situation or been in it before?  It is really strange to have this decision be all up to me and DH...what if we make the wrong one?  Ugh...I am so hormonal right now in general that his doesn't help.

My OB must be behind the times.  So many of your OBs seem to have a crystal ball.  Maybe I should switch doctors next time.

  • imo, the baby's weight is not a reason to induce.

  • That seems a little odd your OB gave you the decision. I would say wait it out... Tongue Tied even though waiting sucks.

And lots of people deliver 9-10+ babies vaginally.

  • I am obviously inexperienced with the whole issue, but I am personally an advocate of waiting as long as possible for the baby to come on its own. Your body is completely capable of birthing your baby, and from what I hear inductions can make everything worse (read: more painful + more complications). So since you asked what we would do, I would definitely wait.
  • I would wait it out. Your baby knows when it is time to be born, so barring a medical reason to induce (being "late" or a 9 pound baby are NOT medical reasons) I would let the baby come on its own. I agree with Miss Mod many women have 9 pound babies, that isn't considered to be abnormally big.

I had to chuckle at this myself. I had my weekly just this morning.   I'm 1-2 cms and my cervix has shortened.  my doctor was talking to me about my due date, if I go past it, etc., but she also said "You could walk out of here today and go into labor - I have no way of telling you when the baby is going to come....."

  • It really depends on how much progress you have once you get closer to your due date. ?Right now it doesn't seem like and induction would work well, but a lot can happen in two weeks.

You would also be surprised at how accommodating a "small pelvis" can be. ?My aunt is only 4'10" and delivered a 9 lb baby! ?They really can't tell until you are actually trying to deliver.?

  • i would wait it out

  • Your OB didn't suggest one way or another?

It's your choice but I wouldn't induce untill I had to.

  • Thanks for the feedback.  Just to clarify, my OB would not induce early b/c of the size of the baby. She would induce if I go past my due date and that is what I wanted.  I am not surprised that she has left this decision up to me.  She doesn't want to be responsible for making that decision for me...she wants me to have all of the information either way and make the decision that is right for us.

Knowing that placenta efficiency can decline after 41 weeks, would you wait past 41 weeks?

Again it depends. ?My doctor orders a NST when you get close to 41 weeks to see if everything is still okay in there.?

i wonder this when people *** about inducing and say they will wait until the baby is ready, as if the baby necessarily "knows" when the right time is.  my dr. induces between 41 and 42 weeks because the placenta is not an everlasting organ and stillbirth rates go up after 41 weeks.  i totally agree with my doc on the issue.  early induction is not smart, but neither is waiting "as long as it takes."

If you have the choice I would not wait past 41 weeks.  I am 41 weeks today and my doctor isn't going to induce me until Friday because of his "on call" schedule.  My BP has been up since Thursday and they are just making me wait it out on bed rest!

  • If I had a high risk of c-section if I didn't induce, I would go ahead and induce.
  • My doctor doesn't let her patients go past 41 wks, so at that point she would induce me if nothing has happened on its own.

She is willing to induce after 39 wks if you've started to make progress on your own, i.e., are already 2-3 cm dilated, but she doesn't push it at all.

Anyway, the 41-42 wks really depends on the doctor. I've seen plenty of ladies on here whose docs induce at 41 wks and some doctors who are willing to let their patients go to 42 wks.

I personally would not be comfortable going to 42 wks if the due date is a pretty accurate estimate (vs. some ladies who aren't so sure about their date of pregnancy as was my sister's case).
