Playschool = too soon?

Is there such a thing as "too much school" or going to playschool "too soon"? My mom thinks if I put DD in playschool this September (she'll be 3 in October, and won't start kindergarten until 2014, two years away) that she'll have too much school and be bored of it faster.

I thought it would be a nice way for her to get interaction with other kids her age, not just her two younger siblings. And bonus, it's a small 2 hour break for me.

The classes would be two days a week for 2.5 hrs in the morning.

  • I would say go for it! 2 days a week and only 2.5 hours a day is nothing! I bet she would love it! I would do it if I could afford it! Preschool is so expensive here:(

  • DD goes 5 days a week to a Montessori school. She loves it and wakes up each morning asking "I go to school, mama?". She has flourished socially and verbally. I also amazed at how much she has learned. She can recognize all of her upper and lower case numbers, shapes, colors, most numbers, and now she knows all of her colors in Spanish. If she seemed anxious or resisted going, i would back off, but as long as your LO seems interested, it doesn't hurt to try!

  • It doesn't sound excessive to me, and I think the social interaction is healthy.  I personally will be waiting to send DD to preschool when she is 4, but only because she goes to daycare 3 days a week and I know she is getting her social needs met there.  I get what your mom is saying...I think there is such a thing as "too much school".  But I think 2 days a week for a couple of hours is no big deal.
