WWYD: Summer Options
I keep going back and forth on this summer for my 4 year old DD. She is currently in a daycare based preschool full time and moving to the 4 year old room on April 2nd. They do a fun camp program over the summer that is a bit different than the school year and they do a bunch of in house field trips.
She has been there since she was an infant. The center has recently had a huge turnover of staff - way more staff changes than I have seen in the 5 1/2 years that we have been there with both of my kids. In the fall, DD will start the PreK program at the elementary school.
Right now, her last day at the center is scheduled to be Aug 15th (we are going away for a long weekend and then she will spend the last 2 weeks at home with her sister - grandparents coming to town for 1 week and then the girls will spend time with DH, my sister or her in-town grandparents or me for the other 5 days).
The PreK program that she will be starting in the fall has an amazing summer program that my older DD will be in as she in the PreK program this year. They are not full for the summer at this point. I casually mentioned to her teacher if they would be able to take Ashley for the summer if they had space - I was more joking about it due to the staff changes at daycare but then started thinking about it for real. The PreK teacher told me if they had space she didn't think it would be an issue (I would need to check with the director to find out for sure).
My concerns with doing this would be that this is DD#1 class, her friends, her place and just not sure how she would do with DD#2 being there or if they would end up playing together and DD#1 would ignore her school friends. DD#1 will miss 3 weeks of this program in late July/early August to go to a daycamp through our temple. Also, is it really fair to move DD to a new program in June and then while she would stay with the teachers come fall, it would be all new kids - is that too much change in a short time? When she moves to her new class on April 2nd - she already knows all the kids and knows the teachers (1 has been at the center for years and the other is new this week but DD has been visiting the class daily to get ready for the move so is getting to know the new teacher).
I keep going back and forth - more leaning towards keeping her at the daycare center for the summer than moving her but just not 100% sold on either option (and these are my only 2 options - I wish I could take the summer off and just keep the girls home with me and do a ton of fun things but just not in the cards with my job!!!)

I'd do the PreK program this summer for both. I did something similar with my kids last summer. Pulled DD from her daycare center/preschool b/c I didn't like how it was being run and sent her to camps with DS. It was great for her b/c she was able to branch out a little with the assurance of having DS there to support her a little. I was worried about consistency over the summer and rocking the boat too much, but she did great with it. And, it helped that everyone who came to PreK was new. It only took her a couple weeks to get acclimated and make some new friends and went much better than I thought it would.
As for your DD1s friends in PreK, unfortunately I think it's an issue that kids close in age will have to deal with for years to come. They are going to have some friends in common. So far, for my kids, it really hasn't been a problem. Sometimes they all play together, sometimes on their own and sometimes they make new friends.
