Baby Names

Baby Nicknames for the IV

Hey everyone!

My husband and I have talked and decided to name our son after my husband.  It is tradition in the family.  My husband is the 3rd and so our son will be the 4th.  I'm wondering about nicknames for the 4th child.  I read somewhere that some are called Dru as in quaDRUple.

What do you think?  Have any other ideas?

What is the name?  Could you just use a natural derivative from the actual name?

  • Four is Patru in Romanian. Pat?

Seriously, go to google translator and see what pops up for 4 in various languages: https://translate.google.com/?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hl=en&tab=wT#auto|eo|four

  • Everything I see on the internet is saying the 4th is usually referred to as "Chip", don't know if that's true but it's something.

  • His name is John Bedford.  His great grandfather goes by Bedford, grandpa is John, and then daddy is Jeb.

  • The only one I know that doesn't use a derivitive of the actual name is called Ivey.  For IV, obviously.  It's actually pretty damn adorable on him.

ETA:  I also know a kid who's called Ives, who is also a fourth.

But I agree with PP that Jack is a natural nickname and very cute.  You could also go with Ford, which I'm not as crazy about.

  • So is Jack a nickname for someone named John? I thought it was a nickname for Junior...

  • If we were having a boy, he would be the fourth too.  The ones I know of are Dru/Drew, Ivey, Quad and Quaid.  I like Dru out of those.  With John, you could go with Johnny, Jack or maybe Jax?

I wonder if it's from the phrase, "a chip of the ole block" ???

I like the suggestion of Jack.

  • I'm honestly really surprised so many people are suggesting nicknames like Dru and Quad and overlooking the usual ones for John, especially when not used by the other relatives.  I've always heard Chip was a nn for Charles.  I know a nickname can be anything and come from anywhere but I think for school and such one of the standard nn are best.  My DH is a II and it doesn't usually show up on rosters etc. so I don't think it would be obvious to most where the name comes from and I think yourselves and your son will have to explain it a lot.  But if that doesn't bother you then I guess it works.

  • I think Johnny is adorable, but it's hard to go back to John when the kid is older. One of my best friends from HS was called Johnny forever, and it's still hard to think of him as John.

Jack is cute, too. I don't like going by something cutesey like Dru or Ives. NMS, and annoying to teachers who will see John on the roster, trust me.

  • The only fourth I have heard of goes by Quinn and that is really the only way I like that name just like Trey for being the third and so on. I do love Jack as a nn for John though. That is what my aunt and uncle did with their son. Dad is John and son is called Jack. The funny thing is they sent jack to a prep school and they misprinted his diploma putting his name as Jack instead of his full/proper name. We all got a good kick out of it :-P
