Baby food making/freezing (NMR)

I have some bananas that I want to blend and puree for baby food but I'm wondering how well they stand up to the freezing/defrosting process. I'm not concerned with some browning but do they taste the same or do they taste like slimy old banana?

Possibly a stupid question but I hate to waste food if they come out weird!

If you have frozen them should I freeze them pureed (I prefer this) or should I freeze them in pieces/whole and then blend when I defrost?

TIA ladies!

Re: Baby food making/freezing (NMR)

  • Personally I just split a fresh banana between my girls - they get it every morning and I just mush it up with a mortar and pestle. But here is what wholesome baby food's says about freezing banana:

Pureed bananas may turn a little brown within a few hours of being prepared and they may also turn brown when they are frozen and then thawed.

You may want to try a drip or 2 of lemon in your banana puree to help stop browning. Using a drop or 2 of lemon juice as a preservative in a fruit pur?e should not cause your little one any tummy or rash issues; the drop or 2 is spread throughout the pur?e and your baby will be consuming just a wee tiny amount.

Another way to store bananas without having them turn brown is by cutting them in half and then freezing them in their jackets, wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. Thaw and then use what you need.
