SLR camera question

I would love to upgrade our current digital camera.  I want to be able to take pics of our kids and focus on tehm, blurring the background.  I was able to do this with the regular camera we had (a nice Canon that I coudl manually focus.)  I do not want to spend a ton of money on a camera and found this : Canon EOS Rebel T3 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55IS Lens at Target for $499.

Does anyone have thi camera?  Can you take quality portraits?  Pics of kids in motion?  Thanks in advance!

Re: SLR camera question

  • I have a Canon Rebel XS which is similar.  Personally, I would just buy the camera body and get a 50mm 1.8 lens instead of the kit lens that comes with it.  I never use mine.  You get much better bokah (the background blur) with the 50mm.  The price is pretty good though, so you might just want to get it for the heck of it.  A 50mm lens is just over $100.

I have the XSi and I completely agree with you.  Thought I do have the kit lens and it has come in handy a few times, the 50mm 1.8 is on my camera 95% of the time.

  • I agree, just get the body, the kit lens sucks! I have a 50mm f1.8 lens too and love it, it is my favorite lens.
  • Jumping boards here, but I managed to find that body with the 50mm F1.8 for almost $500 on Amazon about 2 months ago. I bought them seperately with an extra battery and a good sd card for like $526 total. Just shop around and use camelcamelcamel.com if you are looking on Amazon. Definitely forget the kit lens and get the 50mm though. And it is a great camera, I love mine. HTH
  • I have the Nikon D3100.   GREAT camera for a first time SLR

Super easy to use and takes great pics!
