VBAC

Natural Birth and VBAC

Hey ladies,

I'm new to this board so i'm sorry if this question has been asked before.

I gave birth Dec, 2010 with my first via emergency c-sec and luckily, I qualify for a VBAC this time around - I'm due in October!

I would like to continue with my plans of an unmedicated natural birth, however, considering it's a vbac - is it different? are there any other precautions I should take into consideration? or am I treating this like a "regular" birth, assuming everything else is good.

TIA!

Re: Natural Birth and VBAC

  • My doctor personally recommended an epidural "just in case another emergency c section is needed."

  • I will be looking at my next delivery as a regular vaginal birth, DS was an unplanned c-section, we found out he was breech when I was in labor after my water broke and there was no way to turn him. I am planning on a non medicated birth as well. I don't see any reason why you need to look at it any other way. You could need a emergency c-section, but then again anyone could, to me even if my doctor highly suggested it I wouldn't get the epidural. But I also haven't gone through the trauma of a emergency c-section and if I had that might change my mind.

I may get an epidural, but it won't be because the doctor wants to be ready just in case.

  • We have had lots of ladies have VBACs with epidurals and lots without.  I really think you should do whatever seems right for you.  As for preparing for the birth, there isn't much you need to do that is different from preparing for any other vaginal birth.  Sometimes there is more emotional preparation for a VBAC.  And you might need to talk to your doctor or midwife about what restrictions there are for VBAC (e.g. requiring continuous monitoring) and take that into consideration as you prepare for birth.

  • Definitely talk to your Dr/MW to see what kind of procedures are "necessary" for them during VBAC's.  I know where I am, all of the provideres require internal fetal monitoring for VBAC patients (which in turn could require them to break your water if it hasn't already), so those are things you should ask and then plan for.

But otherwise, I don't really see the need to treat it any differently than how you would any other pregnancy/birth experience.

  • I just had a natural home VBAC, after a relatively healthy pregnancy (had to have my appendix out at 32 weeks, but that went really smoothly and didn't affect the birth at all).  I just posted my birth story, if you want the details.

  • I didn't get an epidural for my VBAC, and with the way things went, I think I would have ended up with a RCS if I had.

The cord was wrapped around DD's shoulder, and her heart rate was dropping. I had to push her out quickly, or they said I would have to get a c-section. Luckily, I was able to give birth after only 15-20 minutes of pushing. Both my nurse and doula said that if I had gotten the epidural (which of course I had asked for during transition...) I probably wouldn't have been able to push with the gusto that I did.

So, sometimes going med-free can help!
