Helmets for flat head

Hi - I haven't been on the the boards in ages,  but just found out on Friday that two of our triplets need helmets to help with flat heads. I would love to hear from anyone whose little ones had to wear them and your experience in general. Also, because we have triplets, I am wondering if there is any kind of financial assistance out there for the helmets, since they run $2,500 per helmet. I appreciate any info you can share. Thanks ladies!

Re: Helmets for flat head

  • A friend of mine had to get one for her child and it was covered by insurance.  Not sure if I am right but I think they are covered if it is for medical reasons and not cosmetic.

  • Hi,

My son wore a helmet for 4 months-he is just finishing his part-time schedule. Overall it hasn't been too bad-it has annoyed him from time to time, but they get used to it. Now he cries everytime he bumps his head cause he doesn't have protection anymore. As far as cost-some insurances cover it and some don't. Ours was an exclusion in our policy and we had to pay out of pocket for it-ours was around $1,800. It sucks that it isn't covered sometimes even if it is medically necessary. However I can tell you now he has a perfectly shaped head-and the time goes by quickly. Good luck!

  • Ds wore one from 7-10m, then wore a 2nd one from 13-16m. ?The first one we got from Children's Hospital & it was the Clarren style helmet. ?It AND the service we received at Children's SUCKED. ?Ds hated that thing. ?The second helmet was a bivalve style helmet from Hanger Orthotics & it was SO much better. ?Ds barely noticed it was on, & I feel that it gave a MUCH better result too. ?Of course this is just our experience...a lot depends on the skill of the orthotist doing the helmet fitting. ?Our insurance covered the 1st helmet. ?By the time we got the 2nd helmet, we had gotten a new insurance policy & they did not cover it. ?We appealed twice & were still denied. ?Ds's 2nd helmet was $1400...shop around & see if you can find less expensive options. ?However you can get the money, DO IT! ?Ds's head is still not really round or "pretty", but it looks normal, & we have the peace of mind of knowing that we did everything we could for him. ?I'll try to post before/after pictures...
