Natural Birth

Homebirths for moms 35+?

Anyone have a homebirth as a 35+ mom?

I am leaning toward this, but I'm a little nervous since my second kid was a surprise vaginal breech delivery (unmedicated) and since now that I'll be 35 when I delivery I do want to have a few genetic tests (skipped all those with our first two).

I can't seem to decide and at this rate, my frist prenatal will be when I'm 12 weeks if I don't make a decision soon.  Any good experiences or advice to share?

Anyone do a home birth and still have the NT screen or similar with another practice?

  • I don't see why you would be more high risk as far as delivery just because of your age. I am planning a HBAC and did have NST etc just because I can but I am also following care with an OB under my HMO so I don't have to pay for labs and ultrasounds. Your MW might encourage you that an NST is not necessary but I don't see why you can't get the extra screening and still have a HB. HTH.

  • I was talking to my midwife after LOs birth in terms of our plans for further children, and my increasing age.

She said that they only really consider 40+ high risk in terms of delivery, and she said what that means is that they will induce at 40 weeks because of the increased risk of placenta deterioration.

I'm in NZ so protocols may well be different here, but 35 isn't old to my mind in terms of actual delivery.

I guess I'm not at a higher risk due to my age, but you're right to ask this b/c it made me realize that I'm more worried about another breech baby than my age.  In our state/town, I can't have a vaginal breech birth with HB or in the hospital.  The closest OB who would allow that is thousands of miles away.  Thanks for putting it that way, so I realized that.

Oh and how did you work it out that you do labs with your OB and pay out of pocket for HB?  I might like to do that since HB would be pay-out-of-pocket with possibly reimbursement after and all labs would be seperate.
