Any tips to help deal with reflux?

My DS is now one month old, and he was diagnosed with sevre reflux. He is on prevacid and we are about to introduce rice cereal in his formula (per pedi. suggestion)

It is so difficult and frusterating to try and get my poor baby to eat and then add to that trying to keep it all down.

It hurts my heart to see him struggle, and I wanted to see if any moms with reflux babies had any tips or suggestions to help make things a little easier for everyone.

We have him sleep at an incline and burp him frequently...but what else can we try?

Does the rice cereal really help?

Re: Any tips to help deal with reflux?

  • Have they done testing to make sure there is nothing physically causing issues.  I would recommend seeing a GI dr.  B is on day 3 of rice in his formula and so far it is working.  It is hard to find the right nipple though for the rice thickened formula.  We are actually going to change to Gelmix instead of rice as soon as it comes as I have reservations on having him on rice so early.

  • sorry our boys have relux too and it's so sad to watch :( they are on prevacid as well and we thicken their bm and formula. the first time we tried rice i didn't think it helped much but i think that is because the meds hadn't started working yet. once the meds started working they were more comfortable while eating but still had large amounts of spit up and were uncomfortable with that.  we started using rice again and it made them constipated but helped the reflux, so now we are using oatmeal and although it doesn't mix as well it still helps and they aren't constipated.
  • Adorable picture!  My son was born 5 weeks early and has dealt with reflux since that time, he is 10 weeks today. I don' t have any new tips from the ones already shared but did learn something new regarding the Prevacid just in case your pedi/pharmacist did not share....if it is the compounded liquid it typically becomes unstable after 30 days which will not hurt your lo but will make it less effective, we definitely saw an increase in the symptoms before making that connection.  Hope that helps a little if you are on the liquid. Hang in there.
