Natural Birth

I met the MW who coined the term 'VBAC' yesterday

My MW is working on her CPM and had to do the skilled portion of the exam yesterday and I agreed to let her use Carly for the newborn exam.  Nancy Wainer, the author of Silent Knife: cesarean prevention and vaginal birth after cesarean, VBAC, was the CPM who was reviewing her.

I didn't know who she was until afterwards when my MW told me.  I just knew she was a MW with a ton of experience.  I actually thought at the time that she was a bit annoyingly crunchy and preachy.  LOL

Anyway, it was neat.  I never realized someone so important to the world of birthing lived 20 minutes from me.

  • Wow! I bet a lot of us would find Ina May Gaskin annoying if we didn't know who she was :) The first MW I interviewed in my area is supposed to be the best in town and the first thing I noticed is a 'if it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown flush it down." sign in the bathroom all her patients use. Haha.

After reading Silent Knife, that doesn't surprise me at all, hee hee. It's still cool you met her!

  • Cool!  I think Nancy Wainer comes across as annoying too, but maybe you have to be that pushy and intense to pioneer change like she did.  As a VBAC mom, I am grateful to her.

  • Interesting, I didn't even know a MW came up with the term. At the hospital I work at they have started using TOLAC "trial of labor after cesarean" instead of VBAC attempt. I find TOLAC more negative and personally hate the term - might be partly why I am having a HBAC instead of a TOLAC. I might have to check out that book.
