Confusional Arousals

My 5 month old awakens at night screaming inconsolably.  It happens anywhere from 1/2 to 2 hours after bedtime (and once at 3 AM) and not every night.  He will scream from 1/2 to 2 hours and the only thing that calms him is a bottle.  My DH and I have tried everything.  I read about confusional arousal (Ferber) that can happen in infants.  They may scream, thrash, etc., but are not fully awake.  Ferber recommends letting them work it out on their own, but I cannot stand to see my LO cry alligator tears in his crib.  It may be triggered by sleep deprivation (my LO is a 30 minute napper about 4 times a day) so this a possibility, but I don't know how to lengthen his naps.  I dread bedtime now because I just wait for the impending screaming and so want him to get his sleep.  Help!

So...long story short-anyone else experience this?  If so, any advice?  Any advice on extending short naps?

Re: Confusional Arousals

  • I had a night with DD about a week ago where she woke up screaming like that. I figured it was teething pain so we gave her some Orajel and after about 10 minutes she calmed down and fell back asleep. Could your LO be teeting?

As for the naps, I have no good advice :(

  • Thanks for the help.  Unfortunately the Orajel has no effect.  He continues to scream.  Mommyhood is tough!

  • My LO is a crap napper unless he's in his swing. I know people will flame me for it, but I let him nap in the swing. He needs motion in order to sleep during the daytime and it keeps him a little more stable for nighttime sleeping.
