Two Under 2

2nd Baby - Crib?

So we have a DD right now (21 months when baby is born and baby will be in our room 6 months), she can go into a big girl bed if we decide to use her convertible crib for the new baby. I can't decide:

*Let DD keep her convertible crib and eventually turn into a full size bed for her & Buy a new convertible crib for the baby and it will eventually turn into a full size bed (will need to buy crib mattress

*Get DD a fs bed (will need to buy fs mattress and fs frame & head/footboard) & Give new baby her convertible crib which will eventually turn into a fs bed

I'm trying to not purchase unnecessary things that will be used a short time, and be cost efficient. What do you think the best option is?

I'm not sure how much a fs frame & head/footboard is so that is research I haven't done.

  • DS will be 19 mo when LO2 comes. We decided to get DS a new crib that converts into a toddler bed and then into a twin size bed. We want to get his new room all set up and have him sleeping in it well before LO2 comes so that isn't another change when baby comes.

  • My DD was 21 months when DS was born. We went ahead and bought another crib. I am SOOOO glad I did. DD is still sleeping in her crib and it is a sanity saver!!! I love that when I put her in there for a nap/bedtime that I dont have to worry about her wandering around or getting into things while I'm feeding/changing/rocking the baby.

  • We're very frugal parents and a crib is very expensive. We had a toddler bed given to us and therefore moved my older son to that (well before baby came). It's working out fine for us. From a cost perspective you're probably better off just going to straight full size. And actually what I would do is get a full size mattress now and just use that on the floor for a while. Then get a frame etc when your child is older (I'm thinking 4ish). That's what we would have done if we didn't have the hand-me-down toddler bed.

  • My kids are way closer together, so we went with a second crib.  My older son climbed out at around two.  It was a life saver to have him in a crib until then.  Their cribs convert into toddler beds so they will be using them for a while.  Both are Ikea Gullivers and they were just over $100.  I think they don't make them anymore because of the new crib regulations.  I'm not worried about it, but you may want to consider getting #2 and new crib that meets the new regulations.  Our plan is to go cheap (but safe)  on the cribs and let them pick out something they like when they get older.
  • Containment is key with 2 small children.

A cheap 2nd crib is the best $$ we ever spent.

We sold the 2nd one on Craigslist for over half of what we paid for it so the end game out of pocket cost was barely anything and so very well worth it.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • We bought a second crib (Connor will be just almost 19 months when his sister is born). It's a convertible and so is the new one. I don't plan to transition either of them to a bed until they figure out how to climb out of their cribs. We only paid $50 for our Ikea convertible crib for baby #2, so it was worth it.

  • Mine are 17 months apart. I haven't bought a crib for #2 yet. He is sleeping in the RNP. But I will be buying the Ikea crib for 100$ and once DS#1 is done w/ his crib I use it as a toddler bed. Unless DS#1 climbs out of his crib in the next month or two. Once he is too big for the toddler bed I will get a twin & sell DS#1 crib. Its a designer crib so I should be able to sell it. I figure I'll get at least 2 years out of the Ikea crib so 100$ isn't bad.
