11.5 months too early for whole milk?

**Sorry if this has recently been asked...I quickly scanned the first page and didn't see any answers.

DD is exclusively breastfed but in the past week or so I have noticed a SIGNIFICANT decrease in my supply.  Bedtime feedings have resulted in tears and frustration at least 3 times in the past couple weeks.  So my fear is that I might not make it to exactly 1 year on breastmilk alone and I'm wondering if it's ok to start whole milk?  I plan on calling my pedi tomorrow, but was wondering what you ladies have been told/done.

TIA!

  • Someone somewhere recently posted a question similar to yours...I remember seeing that a few of the bumpies pedi's suggested starting whole milk between 11-12 months. I think you'd be ok...and KUDOS to you for making it this long exclusively on breast milk!

  • I think it's fine to supplement as this point... I wish my LO would accept a little more milk at this point so I didn't have to worry about pumping for daycare. We've been trying a shot glass of whole milk at lunch with mixed success for the past couple weeks. Hopefully she'll warm up to it soon. Good luck and congrats on almost making it to the year mark - nice job mama!!

  • I EBF and we started LO on whole milk a few weeks ago. I started it in with meals tho, and put it cold in a straw cup. I am still nursing him (when he lets me, a lot of times now he will pop off and shake is head at me :( so I wanted to differentiate between breast milk = sustenance and cows milk  = beverage. It has gone very well, and he has not had any allergy type issues.
  • I started mixing a little cow milk in with her daycare boob bottles when she turned 11 months. We are now doing half boob/half cow for daycare.

I'm going to be doing this.

Good job for making it this far, mama!

  • I asked my sister's opinion on transitioning to whole milk a few weeks ago (she's a pedi).  She said it's fine and they usually say do it at 12 months and he was close enough (he was 11 1/2 months at the time).  Anytime between 11-12 months is generally fine.

Great job on making it this far!!

  • Our pedi gave the ok to start transitioning at 11 months.  My supply was tanking, so we started mixing cows milk into their bottles.  They're now on 100% cows milk at 11.5 months and are doing just fine.  Now I just need to get them to drink better out of sippie cups.
  • I am in the same position as you as DD is EBF and my supply has been tanking recently and I have zero freezer stash. In order to keep up with her 2 bottles at the sitter's my pedi gave me the ok to start mixing WCM into her BM bottles. She has done well with the new transition, and I'm planning on beginning to wean from the pump over my spring break from school. (I teach FT.) I am working on getting her to drink more from the sippy cup, but right now, I'm not stressing about it. Good job making it this far, and I'm so happy I did as well! Big Smile

  • our pedi has been concerned with weight gain, though i really never worried, so i had been trying to supplement with formula. been EBF. DS hates formula. then i offered him whole milk at 10 months...and he accepted. so now we're doing breast milk, whole milk, water, and diluted juice. i guess we're a bit early, but DS seems happy!
