DS1 will be 6 in June and the reason I think of this is last night we were watching the Discovery Channel's Frozen Planet program. He loves nature shows like that. The very beginning of it shows two polar bears mating. He didn't ask what they were doing, but he easily could have, and I was not sure what the appropriate level of information would be for him at age 5.5. WDYT? If your child asks something like where do babies come from, what is mating, etc, how much info do you provide at this young age?
Re: What age for a basic sex talk?
I'm thinking of having the basic one soon since DD has already asked how babies get into the mommy's tummys, etc. I'd rather her hear it from me than somewhere else. I'm thinking about getting a kids book from the library with the correct terms and everything. (I used to babysit for a family, and it was the kids' bedtime book. They were 5 and 3 with an infant sister. That was fun for a 12 year old to read.)
The only problem is that she would blab to all her friends. (She already said to one little girl friend who came and picked her up, giving her a wedgie, "Ow! You're hurting my vagina!" Her friend looked at her strangely and said, "What's that?" DD said, "Your privates.")

My three little ones
DD just turned 5 and for about the last 6 months has been pretending to be pregnant with her dolls and talking about how "babies grow in mommies tummies, but not in daddy's" and asking how they get out. I'm thankful she hasn't yet asked how they get in! but figure this will be coming soon. DH and I try to only provide the information she asks for in simple (correct) terms and she seems satisfied with that. I agree with some of the previous posters in that we plan on providing information as the situation arises. I definately want my girls to understand sexual information/intimacy BEFORE the situation arises and it seems this age is getting younger and younger all the time.
Thanks to the ladies you provided some resources to check out!
Sorry, I had to lol that "he hasn't asked any follow-up questions". Jaysus, if he knows all that what follow-up question could he possibly ask?
My 6 year old knows nothing about where babies come from. He thinks that he got in my belly when I "swallowed a crumb" . My 4 year old DD calls her vagina her "front butt" (I've been dragging my feet on correcting her). My approach is to answer the questions that are asked and no more. So far the questions haven't been asked.
