How long in newborn size diapers?

My DS was born at 4lbs5oz and is now 7lbs12oz.. he is a little over 2 months old ( almost 10 days corrected). I was going to buy more diapers in bulk, but not sure how much longer he will be in newborn size? How long / what size did your preemie graduate? Or the best way to tell? He is not "chunky" still, but really tall!

Re: How long in newborn size diapers?

  • Great question! I received several large boxes of NB & I'm not sure we will even use them all. (DS was born at 3 lb 11oz & is now just almost 7 lbs). Interested what experienced moms have to say...

  • My son was in the hospital for 35 days, and he came home when he was 6 lbs.  He was in newborn diapers for 1 month.  And then he was in size 1 for 1 month as well.  He was a chunky monkey though.  We were trying to put more weight on him with his Neosure formula.

  • Our daughter is also tall, but skinny. She came home at 4lbs10oz, and we were in newborn diapers until she was right around 8 pounds... the 1's were a little big for a week or so, and now they fit fine. I'm not sure I'd get too many more in the NB size!

  • I tried a size one and he is swimming in it! Any leaks during the transition? He is just shy of 8 lbs now..

  • I'm not sure if this is true of all the brands (or all babies), but we're using Huggies and I find that it's time to switch when DS gets to the weight at the low end of the next one up.  Right now we're in size 3 and he's 20 pounds.  Size 4 goes from 22 to 36 pounds so when he gains another 2 pounds I'll probably switch to the next one up ... even though size 3 technically goes up to 27 pounds.  I hope that makes sense!

  • Our experience is similar to dvwalborns; we switch over either at the low end of the next size or slightly before.   I usually buy 1 pkg of the next size up and try it when I think we're ready.  If I see gaps in the legs or at the back then I know we're not ready to move yet.  Right now dd is almost ready for size 3 but not quite there yet so I only buy the size 2s week to week but have been buying the size 3s in bulk since I know she'll be in them for awhile.  Hope that helps! :)

  • Baby Caroline is 8 lb 11 oz and still wearing newborns in Huggies Little Swaddlers. It says up to 10 lbs but I think we may have to switch a little before she hits 10 lbs bc sometimes they are looking a tad tight.

  • Corri came home from the NICU in preemie diapers (6lbs, 6oz) in early May, and then was in newborn diapers until at least August/early September (about 11lbs), so it was a while before she went into size 1's. We ended up putting her into size 1's before she weighed enough because she was long and needed the length of them.
  • My DD came home from the hospital Nov. 26th weighing 5lb 10oz and she stayed in newborn Pampers until mid-end January (I thinks he was 8 lbs then?).  We transitioned to Huggies size 1 and then she fit into Pampers size 1 once the huggies ran out (we got a diaper cake of Huggies size 1) - the Huggies were a bit smaller than Pampers, in my opinion so we transitioned that way.

  • I guess every baby is truly diffferent.  My son came home in size 1s and was only 7 lb 4 oz.  He was in size 1s for at least a week before coming home.  The NB were way to small and he was leaking poop (BF baby).  We used Swaddlers.
