Newb question... contraction timing

Reading the post below about when to head to the hospital - I understand that the 5-1-1 has something to do with timing of contractions... but what do these numbers actually mean?

Thanks!

Re: Newb question... contraction timing

  • 5-1-1 means:

    *Contractions every 5 minutes

    *Contractions last for 1 minute

*This pattern has been happening for at least 1 hour

    This.

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch I would recommend getting a contraction timer app.  I used Contraction Master last time and it worked really well.  You just tap a button when the contraction starts and ends.  You can easily see at a glance how far apart they are and how long they're lasting.  You can also email the data to your OB, MW, etc.

This sounds great! I'm going to download it now. Thanks!

  • I'll be perfectly honest.  I had braxton hicks regularly for weeks in my third trimester the first time around (lucky enough to get them in the second trimester this time around).  They'd come regularly (5-7 minutes) and would be so regular that I'd think labor was coming.  When labor finally hit, I never timed them. Not once.  Labor contractions felt so different that there was no question in my mind.  I called my MW when I could no longer walk or talk through the contractions (had to stop and breath through them) because that's what I heard from both her and our natural child birth instructor.
