Wow. I just got hosed (vent!)

I'm an atty and had a verbal offer from a government agency.  I asked for an offer letter and was informed they don't "do" offer letters (which is very strange compared to the private sector).  I asked them to confirm my starting salary and was waiting on THEM to get back to me before I accepted.  I followed up 2x, the first time no call back.  The second was yesterday and I finally got a call back - suddenly there is a hiring freeze and they are withdrawing the offer!!!!  WTF???  I am so upset and shocked right now.  Unfortunately, I have no recourse since I had not formally "accepted".  Basic contract law in my state, you can revoke an offer that has not been accepted.  Now I am questioning my desire to work there should another oppty come up - if this is the way they treat people.  GRRR!!  All I can say is its a good effing thing I didn't give notice yet or I would be royally screwed right now.  Thanks for listening.

  • That really sucks!  I'm so glad that you didn't give your notice...that would have been a terrible situation.

Just as a side note though - I'm an attorney (private practice), and I've been offered a number of jobs and never gotten a formal letter.  Ever.  Maybe it's just my state?  Or the firms I've been offered jobs with?  I don't know.  Interesting though.

  • yes - DH left private to go to the government last year and we both thought it was odd there there was no formal offer letter.  I think you have to accept before they send the offer letter.  Its weird. ...

  • That's normal even for government jobs here. I was awarded a position that the entire "entity" was in a hiring freeze for 4 years. Needless to say, I didn't wait around for it.
  • Yeah, gov't jobs can suck. My agency rescinded positions about a year ago that had been offered and accepted by the candidates. The funding that we had been promised was cut at the last minute. Unfortunately, there wasn't a whole lot we could do about it.
