Rant about reusable bags

Does anybody else have trouble with the sackers at the grocery store understanding your bags?

They'll get down to 2 items left, then ask me if I want the rest in paper or plastic. (Or they won't even ask and just start shoving stuff into plastic bags.) Um, neither, I brought bags for a reason, just stick them in another bag that has room!

Put more than 3 items in a bag. They aren't plastic bags, they won't break! I want my entire cart full of stuff to fit into the bags I brought.

Put the cold stuff in the insulated bag. You know, that thick bag with the shiny stuff inside? (That I even bought at the store you work at, so you should be familiar with it!) Why would you put a bunch of dry goods in there when right beside you is a bunch of cold stuff?

Yes, they are made of cloth, but the principles are still the same: put heavy stuff on the bottom and light stuff on top.

I'd rather just sack my own groceries!

Re: Rant about reusable bags

  • I hear you. I usually shop at the commissary so I have to tip the naggers separate from my bill. I hate paying for it when they don't even pay attention to stuff like that.

  • I don't get this, either.

Usually I end up popping around and rearranging things so they're bagged properly and everything fits.

It's happened before where I've gone it, bought fruit, yogurt and a bottle of water and I get the fruit and yogurt in one bag and the bottle of water in another!  I try to make sure to tell them I won't be needing a bag, but really it shoud be something they ask for small puchases like that.

  • I've found certain baggers at my grocery seem to grasp the reusable bag concept better than others, so I try to get into their lines. It seems odd, but it's mostly the young guys that I never have to explain the bags to, and the older baggers that seem shell shocked when they see my stack of bags.

  • This is why I always do self checkout. (of course it's more of the way of life here. i walk everywhere and can only buy as much as I can carry for the 15 min walk home. That said it's surprising I can fit a whole cart of food in one backpack and one envirosac. Not 12 plastic bags.)
  • I try to load the check-out belt as I would like to have my groceries sacked.  Boxes all together, fruit & veggies last, etc.  Doesn't always work but it does guide them along a little bit.
  • It doesn't seem to be a problem in Seattle. In fact I have the opposite problem. They load the bags like they can hold 50lbs a pc and sometimes I can barely lift the bags and my LO. And why would you put ALL the heavy stuff in one bag when I brought 4 or 5 bags?

    I do this too!

  • I hear ya, this is why I always do self-check out, I don't even get why anyone wouldn't do self-check out.
  • i get so frustrated that when i get to the checkout i always tell them i'll bag my own. it saves me the headache.

I love self check out, but the main grocery store I go to doesn't have any self check out stations. :-(

Duh, didn't even think some stores don't have self-check out, lol. Every grocery store around here does.

I do this too and had one that seemed to pick their way through my stuff.  I told them I had it the way I wanted it, so please just take it off in line.

I offered to bag my own at walmart and was told I couldn't.  I was also told I couldn't take the hangers out of the clothes I bought to save time - the checker had to do it.

Doesn't make any sense to me at all!

  • Not really. We usually go to the lane where you check out your own groceries or we go to Trader Joe's, where the encourage reusable bags. I have forgotten them a few times and the cashier gave me a "shame on you" speech, but I assured him that we recycle. Oops!
