*Fred* or other positive discipline ladies..

I am in desperate need of some suggestions.  Since DS developed a desire to pick out his clothes we have let him do so.  He generally wears sweats, cotton pants, or pajama pants..and a random long sleeve shirt for winter.  He is very verbal about wanting "soft clothes" and wears a lot of pajama tops or bottoms.

Our weather drastically changed from snow to 80 degrees, so we quickly had to move from long sleeves and pants to shorts and short sleeved shirts.  DS is refusing to wear short sleeve shirts.  In all of our conversations the most I have been able to figure out is that DS wants to wear long sleeves, because they are the "whole shirt."

I have tried a few things. One day I let him wear long sleeves and he was clearly very warm, but did not ask to change.  I put away his long sleeve pajama shirts, so they are not an option..but he just gets more upset.  We went to Target and I let him pick out a few short sleeve shirts...he wore one on Saturday and now says he doesnt like them.

I am at a loss of what to do.  Clothing/dressing is one area that DS and I feel we can let DS make his own decisions and have freedom.  So...feeling very stuck right now.

  • Thanks Fred.  Now that you mention it DS has been asking a lot about what other people are wearing.  He asks if DH and I are wearing short sleeves and we say yes.  He will also point to people on the street and mention what they are wearing.  That is a good idea to point out the signs of being hot and letting him pick up on that.

  • I had a similar problem with Ari - when I put him in short sleeves or shorts last year, he kept pulling on the seams & yelling "close it!" I did something very similar to Fred - pointed out what other ppl wore & that he was hot wearing long sleeves. I also let him wear a long sleeve shirt under his short sleeve tee to let him get used to the look of it.

I also hang outfits ready to go in the closet. So it's shirt, matching pants, shirt, matching pants, etc. It can get a little ridiculous hanging up sweatpants, but this way Ari can just point to an outfit & there's no argument about matching or whatever. It also saves time on hectic mornings.

This is a good idea.  At this point DS rarely matches, but we are fine with that.  I guess there will come a point where we may have to coordinate a bit more.

This am was much better.  I asked him to change and he did.  I put out a few pairs of pj bottoms for him to wear, so I think that is helping a bit..because he likes those.  A little struggle with the short sleeve shirt, but he put a sweatshirt on over it and it seemed fine.  Good news is the weather looks like it will stay warmer, so we probably won't have to switch back to "winter" clothes.  Even if it does cool down I think I will stick with zip up hoodies to avoid getting all the long sleeves back out.
