Parenting Magazine on Organic Formula

Nov. 2008 issue Page 40

Q. Should I go organic? I've read that some contain more sugar than regular formula.

Nutritionally, the organic formulas are the same as any other, says Dr. Klish. And though some do contain sucrose, which may be a bit sweeter than other sugars, it's still on par with sugars in other formulas. The bottom line? "This is more of an emotional decision than a health one," says Dr. Klish. If living an organic lifestyle is important to your family, then by all means go for it -- just be prepared to spend extra.

?

Emotional decision more than health? ?What do you think about this? ?We haven't really looked into formula, since ds is breastfed but this answer seems odd.?

If its important to you - go for, just be prepared to spend extra.?

  • i don't think it's odd.  i think he could have used a better word than "emotional" but the gist is the same.

Yea I think its the whole emotional thing that gets me. ?It makes it seem like parents who by organic are doing it only for made up reasons or something.?

  • A more in-depth answer might have been in order. From what I've seen non-organic formula doesn't contain much in the way of the residues one might be trying to avoid by feeding organic, as opposed to organic vegetables, fruits and meats which really do make a difference in terms of chemical residues etc. (of course that is putting environmental concerns aside).

If he had said something like that and then said "but if the environmental concerns outweigh the cost for you then go for it" at least that's an answer.

  • Yea I haven't really read up on formula, so wasn't sure. ?Now I am tempted to go to their site and look for other organic articles.

  • I found it a little strange when I read that too.  "A matter of personal opinion" would have been better than "emotional".  I don't think it's an emotional decision.  I would guess that people who choose to use organic formula don't do it based on emotions...they do a bunch of research on what is best for their child.
