Clicky Poll -- Is your child gifted/advanced?

Re: Clicky Poll -- Is your child gifted/advanced?

  • My child is in early intervention, so he has been tested.

He is advanced in gross/fine/problem solving skills, is average with receptive language, and is pretty seriously delayed in expressive language.

I did this poll before and a good 60% of nest kids were advanced :)

  • I know DD is more advanced than the other kids in her preschool class but I don't think she is gifted.

DS on the other hand is behind.

  • I think DS is advanced in written language since he can write and read phonetically and in problem solving skills.  But he's a little behind in verbal language and social skills.

I know a kiddo who I believe is truly gifted (not tested though).  He's only 2 months older than DS and I have to keep reminding myself that of his age whenever I see him.  He seem at least a year older, if not more.

  • I said SS because we're kind of between the first two options. We haven't had any testing or anything, but Julia's teacher brought DH and me in for a conference to discuss that she feels she's gifted and that once she's in elementary school we should look into testing for it. We weren't surprised by that since we suspected that based on other kids her age we know. I don't suspect Emma is particularly gifted.

  • I voted yes, but not confirmed by an outside source.  I hate that I voted that way, because I don't want to be one of "those" moms, but that is what I think.

Her play therapist has confirmed for us that DD is very intelligent, that her anxiety stems from this and that her mood extremes are also related to it.  She is ahead of her classmates in many areas, but certainly isn't a prodigy doing complex math or anything.

I find it very stressful, and any time someone mentions it find myself in a panic.  I'm afraid that I'm not equipped to raise a gifted child properly.

  • My oldest is 6 in Kindy and reading at a 4-5th grade level.  My SIL who is a first grade teacher determined what level she's at.  Other than that, I think she's pretty average across the board.

So definitely advanced in reading but I wouldn't say at all that she's "gifted".

  • My 6.5 yo tested into a gifted program based on a test that she took when she was 4.5.  She also scored very high on an IQ test.  I'm sure she's a bright girl and she'll do well academically (if she has better study skills than I did).  But testing kids that age is meaningless and I only did it because it was a way to get schooling options beyond our zoned school which I wasn't wild about.

She's currently reading and doing math above grade level, but I still don't know what that means long term.  As long as she enjoys school and is challenged and not struggling, I'm happy.

  • I have two kids with high IQ's.  DD is in the 90th percentile and is doing great.  she goes to a private school with an advanced curriculum and most of the kids in her class are at the same level.

DS has an IQ that places him in the 98th percentile, possibly 99th.  For him, having a high IQ has been anything but a gift.  Truly high IQ's tend to come with their own set of problems and quirks.  From my perspective, slightly above average is a much better gift.
  • My babies show they are mostly average in their progress reports.  I couldn't be prouder.

Can you elaborate on some of the quirks?
  • This is funny. In reality (i.e. not the Nest) less than 5% of kids are considered "gifted."
  • Not advanced but possibly gifted. She had ADD & Dyslexia so not a great reader, speller nor good at writing. Her teacher, tutor & specialist say she's super smart, gets complicated concepts, plays around non-stop (ADD) but absorbs/gets her work done way faster than peers, has a near photographic memory & her drawing/creative skills are amazing. She's not a typical "good" focused attentive student. My younger 2 are average as far as I can tell.
  • DD has counted to 30 since about 15 months old, knew the alphabet around that time. Tells people her favorite piece is Bach's Goldberg Variations (since about 2), can identify every violin concerto's of Bach's from the opening movement.

She most likely has aspergers like DH. She has been evaluated for autism, and they feel aspergers is the correct diagnosis but want to wait.

Is she gifted? Perhaps, but most likely she has been exposed to DH's quirks since birth and he talks about and plays her music all the time. It is what kids are exposed to sometimes that really dictates their interests, etc.

Dh scores in the high 160s for IQ. The man is brilliant. Yet he can't make friends, cannot lie (even to save feelings), doesn't understand appropriate behavior (ie laughing in church or funerals, etc). Do I want that life for DD, even if it means the high IQ? No. If it is her path, I will try to help her navigate it best we can.

  • I have 2 kids - 21 months apart.

DD#1 was born with a brain injury but is fine now - she does have ADHD (diagnosed at 5 years and a few months) and a sever speech delay and has been in therapy for 2+ years already.  She is a June b-day with a Sept 1 cutoff and yes, we held her back as there was no way she would have done well in kindergarten this year.  She is now on par with the kids in her class - not the top of the class and not the bottom, just doing average from what I have gathered in talks with her teachers and the other parents.  Her conference is (PreK) is coming up in a few weeks.  She has areas where she struggles and she will most likely always struggle.  Things just don't come as easy to her.

DD#2 just turned 4 and will be in PreK in the fall and Kindy the year after.  She is a smart little girl, can already write her name totally on her own, is starting word recognition and has a real interest in learning and wanting to read, can do basic math.  At this point, I would not say she is ahead or gifted - she is ahead of where DD#1 was at when she was 4 but its not a fair comparsion and I don't look at them that way.  She has been in an amazing daycare/preschool program where they do work with the kids on educational things - even more so in the short time since older DD was in the same program.  She also has always been around us working with her older sister and has picked up on things fast.  WE shall see what happens once she starts kindergarten and on and see if she falls into a gifted program for any areas but I won't push it unless she is really bored and needs to be challenged.

My nephew (8 1/2) was tested in the fall and is gifted, especially in math.

  • DD is smart, reading past her grade level and writing is past her grade level. But I do not consider her advanced or gifted. She just loves reading and writing.

I posted this in the other thread, but this list was helpful with seeing some differences with advanced learners and gifted.

I like this a lot. I was moved into some gifted classes in middle school, and I'm actually a good mix of both sides of the list.

I voted SS for DD1. I think it's too early to know for sure one way or the other.
