Sciatica Q

If you have or have had sciatica, when in your pregnancy did it start?  I am only 7 weeks and I think I have it.  W/ sciatica, does it get worse as the day goes on?  I wake up feeling fine, but I'm a teacher, so the more  I'm standing and on my feet, the more it comes back and is uncomfortable.  Anything I can do for it?

Re: Sciatica Q

  • I had sciatica about 6 months ago due to a slipped disc in my lower back.  It can definitely get worse as the day progresses too.  There are certain exercises you can do to help relieve the nerve that's being pinched.  I found that if I sat in a chair with one leg crossed (man-style, ankle to knee) and looped my arm through the hole and pulled the crossed leg close to my chest, it relieved a lot of the pain.  Google sciatica exercises/stretches and you'll come up with quite a few.  Good luck!!

My chiropractor just taught me something similar to this stretch last week (said to leave your foot on the ground and just lean forward toward the foot that's resting on top of your knee, and for a deeper stretch, try to lean toward the knee of the crossed leg).

I don't have sciatica (knock on wood; he was talking prevention), but he said that it tends to develop in pregnant women as their pelvis expands. There's a muscle that runs along the side of your back on each side; This muscle passes over the sciatic nerve. So as your pelvis expands, it sandwiches the nerve more tightly between it and that muscle, putting pressure on it. My chiropractor said that stretching that muscle will help create some room and relief.

    Good luck!

  • I am currently 10w 4d and my sciatica started around week 7.  I comes and goes and usually is worse at night.  I am a retail manager so I am on my feet walking around all day.  When I come home at night and sit down I usually can't get back up.  But, I am in the same boat where it is manageable during the day and bad at night.
