Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Blanket in crib....other options?

Just moving over from 6-9. LO will be 9 months on the 21st. Hello all!

LO has been swaddled up untill now with no problem. We've only swaddled him legs for a long time, so he does have his arm out to hold his lovey and self sooth. This week hes been escaping from it all the time.  Everytime I go in, weather its in the morning of durring the night, hes all unwraped and sometimes holding the blanket. He takes him naps unswaddled, so in hoping the transition won't be too rough.

I know a lot of people use sleep sacks. My LO is 30" long and have only seen them that fit up to 28". What other choices do I have? does anyone use a crib sheet tucked into the botten of the crib so LO can't pull it over there face or get wrapped up in it? knitted blanked with lots of holes for air flow? I know there not technically supposed to have a blanket untill atleast over a year, just wondering what others have done. Thanks!

  • DS is 31 inches and fits in large Halo brand sleep sacks. They also have sleep sacks (XL size) with foot holes and I think those would fit your LO for a while.

  • you can totally still use a sleep sack (if he likes it) my son is 30" 22lbs and wear the halo in size large with plenty of room the Dee Dee in Large is even bigger. But I would test out a halo because they are cheaper see if he likes it. DS uses a blanket for naps and sometimes towards the early morning, like from 4:30am to 6:30am (he wakes for a bottle and I usually just take him out of it) i don't really worry about it but then I do because I feel like i'm supposed to worry about it (if that makes any sense)

  • I really think it depends on the baby.  My LO has always been a kicker and I have never seen the blanket near her face, it is always kicked to the bottom the of the crib.  We have been using a blanket for months now.  We also have a sleep sack that we received as a gift and it is super long.  You could try online to find a longer sleep sack if you are worried about getting tangled in blankets.   :0)

  • DD is 26 lbs/30.5 inches and she loves her sleep sacks. We were in size large for a while and just recently bought the XL's. They are much bigger and there's tons of room.

  • I thought the whole point of swaddling was to keep the arms in, and the only reason to swaddle arms out was just in transition from the swaddle to unswaddled.  I can't imagine, especially if your baby naps unswaddled, that a sleepsack will feel much different to him than an arms-out swaddle.

  • DD never had a blanket/sleep sack once we stopped swaddling. She seems to do just fine.

  • We did sleep sacks for a while (during colder weather) but he's been sleeping in just footed pjs for a while now and is perfectly content.  We don't do a blanket/sheet because DS is a very active sleeper and I worry about strangulation.  We'll cross that bridge next winter.
  • My daughter ...gasp... sleeps with a muslin blanket on her face. I have tried and tried to stop her, but she won't sleep without it.

  • Thanks for all the replies. I'm gonna look for a sleep sack today and hopefully he'll like that. If not, I'll go with a blanket I think. He never puts anything over his face, the lovey or his swaddeling blanket.

We've never, ever swaddled him with his arms in. Hes never allowed us to even when he was a newborn. Hes always wanted his hands free and would squirm and cry until we took his arms out. I know the sleep sack won't be as tight as I swaddle him, but since he loosens it so fast now it probably feels similar at that point.

  • My son sleeps with a blanket, too.  I'm not concerned about it.  My pedi said it was fine at this point.

We do footie PJs in varying weights depending on the temp, and onesies underneath if necessary. It's warm here now, but w/ her fan and eventually the AC, she's perfect in light cotton footies with a short-sleeve onesie under.

DD hates the sleepsack and has been unswaddled for a long time now. I will not put anything in her crib until well over a year (I hope to get to next winter). It's a strangulation issue, to me, more than anything. DD moves like crazy in her sleep.

    All of this.

  • Winners has sleep sacks you could fit a 4 year old in. The lightweight ones were $16 and heavier were $20. Super good deal.

I like the sleep sacks. It keeps his legs in the crib. Works for us, so we won't do blankets until at least next winter. Possibly not until he's in a bed.

My LO hates sleep sacks and has never tolerated them so she sleeps with a blanket.  She has good head and body control and knows to move it away from her face if it's covering it, so I'm not too worried about it.  That's just me though.
