Achy legs?

Two nights this week DD has woken up in tears b/c her legs were aching.  This happened last spring too.  She has just grown about an inch and a half and probably still has a good 1/2 - 1 inch to go before she's done with this spurt.  But, since the weather has been nice lately, she's also been a lot more active, too.

Any idea what this is from?  Growing or her lazy bum finally getting outside for some exercise?

Anything you can think of to help with this?  I'm thinking that maybe a motrin before bed could help.

Re: Achy legs?

  • I spoke with DS's pedi about this because DS was waking up from time to time in tears, saying that his legs hurt. The dr. said that there's a theory that "growing pains" is just a myth, and that some kids are actually hyper-extending their joints while playing and not realizing. He bent DS's thumb back really far (without it hurting) and said that DS is probably super-flexible and doesn't know he's even doing it.

In either case, I give Motrin when he wakes up in the middle of the night from it. I don't usually give it before bed because it's hit or miss if he's going to wake up, and I don't want to give him Motrin every night.

  • Crazy how doctor's have changed. I remember having this issue up until I was about 8 or 9. Sometimes I couldn't even walk. I vividly remember my pediatrician telling my mom, it's nothing she'll get over it.

I would flip if that's the answer I got from DS's pedi!

  • She might be a bit dehydrated with this unexpected heat and extra activity.  I'd try a banana and an extra cup of water before trying motrin.  You can also have her do some simple stretches before bed.
