Natural Birth

The best laid plans - birth story

From the time I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to have a planned c-section or at the very least, an epidural.  Well, the best laid plans ... Big Smile

Because I am of AMA, my doctors had me getting weekly ultrasounds at their maternal fetal medicine group from week 36 on.   At my week 39 u/s, I knew MFM was going to tell me that I had to go the Hospital because my amniotic fluid was too low. I wasn't worried though because I was 39wks 2days.   They didn't disappoint me and sent me straight to the hospital.  At about 11:30am, my doctor told me the plan, which was to give me medicine (Cervadil) at 11:30am and 10pm in order to prepare me to be induced on Friday (3/2) morning since I was barely 1 cm and not too thin. He warned me that the medicine could possibly make me go into labor, but it didn't happen often.

At about 930pm, 3 nurses come into my room and told me that I needed to be on 100% oxygen and that they needed to change my IV immediately b/c they didn't like the baby's numbers on the monitor. At this point, I was barely feeling anything from the Cervadil.  They also told me that the doctor was on his way back to the hospital.  When he got there, he told me that he didn't like the baby's numbers and wasn't giving me the 10pm dose of Cervadil.  He also said that he was going to start the Pitocin in the morning but he didn't expect it to work since I was still barely 1cm.  He also told me that I couldn't eat or drink anything after 12am.  He was definitely preparing me for a c section in the morning. But to his surprise, after I went on the oxygen and they started the new IV, the baby's numbers dramatically improved.  He said that he still wasn't going to give me the second dose of Cervadil and he continued to prepare me mentally for a c section in the morning.

Well....at 12:30am, all of a sudden my water broke and by 1am I began having regular intense contractions (2-3 minutes apart) and to everyone's surprise, I was already 6 cms.  The nurses were going to give me the epidural then, but checked my chart and apparently, there were no orders for an epidural.  My doctor then came back to the hospital and at 1:30am or so asked me if I could try to give birth without the epidural because he wasn't sure if the baby's heart rate would drop if I got one.  Of course, I said I would do it. The next hour was excruciating since the contractions never ever let up.  At about 2:30am, I started to push and at 2:50am, the doctor's demeanor completely changed.  My little guy's umbilical cord was wrapped around his shoulders and in imminent danger of wrapping around his neck.  My doctor gave me 10 minutes to push and then he would have to do a c section.  Luckily, he was able to get him out at 259am.

Although I planned on having an epidural and truth be told, any other drugs they would have given me, I obviously couldn't do it if it was a problem for my little man.  I am really proud that I was able to give birth to Zane Christopher naturally :-)
