Toddlers: 24 Months+

And just like that we're in a toddler bed...

So the past few nights my easy to fall asleep 2 year old has decided to scream and cry at bedtime for at least an hour. We were going in at intervals, telling him its time to sleep etc...(kind of a toddler version of Ferber I guess). Then we hear a THUD and he's at his door out of his crib. My husband took the front rail off and made it into a toddler bed so he wouldn't fall out. It was all a little traumatic for him so I let him sleep with us last night for the first time ever.

Now my dilemma is, how do I get him to stay in it tonight?? In your experience did it work well to go cold turkey, make sure the room is safety proofed, gate the door and make him stay in there no matter what until he falls asleep or go gradual? For example I could sit by his bed until he falls asleep tonight, by the door tomorrow and then be done with it the next night. Advice is needed!

Re: And just like that we're in a toddler bed...

  • We made it really exciting for her, then put her in it, did our normal routine, walked out, and closed the door. <-- We also set up a video camera on night vision to record all of her antics... SO glad we did. We got the funniest stuff! If you want to see it, I've got it on youtube.

Anyway, she got up, played, walked around, etc. until she got tired. We went in a few times and put her back in bed. Eventually she fell asleep in the floor. We put her back in before we went to bed. This happened for about three nights, then it wasn't as fun to her, so she just fell asleep in her bed.

  • Ds went to a toddler bed in one night, no issues.  We put him in, regular routine, he fell asleep and we've been good sine then.  Maybe you'll be so lucky? Nap time was upset for about a week.
