Natural Birth

Has anyone refused a c/s or induction at 42 weeks?

Just wondering what would happen at that point. I'm trying for a vbac so inducing isn't an option locally....so I assume I'd have to refuse a c/s once I hit 42 weeks. I also assume my homebirth midwife can't legally deliver me after that point...

  • I have no idea, I just wanted to say that I hope your little guy comes soon and that everything goes well. I'm really excited for your birth story!

  • My homebirth midwives will deliver after 42 weeks assuming you are passing NST's. I had both of mine before 40 so I don't have first hand experience but they said they have gone as far as 42,4days.

  • don't assume anything! ask!

if your HB MW is under the direction of an OB, than she may legally have to transfer you at 42 weeks. mine is not and had no problem with me going past 42 weeks for my hbac. i didn't, but just barely. DD came at 41.6 (just about 24hrs after a membrane sweep).

  • Yep, find out what your MW's policy is.  Mine will transfer care to her back up team of OBs who are also inclined towards natural birth.

  • I had Lily at 43 weeks.  It was never a question that we would wait for her to be ready since we were both doing so well.  I saw my MW pretty much daily after I had 42 weeks for NSTs.  I was going to have a u/s the day after I went into labor.

  • I think it's pretty rare for anyone to go longer than 42 weeks. I hope it happens for you soon!

  • I know at my birth center, they've had moms go past 42 weeks. At that point, they are already monitoring very closely with NSTs, ultrasounds, etc. to ensure everything is still going well. If not, they would discuss transferring care to an OB.

Hang in there momma, I was overdue with my last and I know how mentally tough it is. He will be here before you know it.

  • My HB MW is not legally allowed to let you go past 42 weeks without transferring care to the OB/Hospital.

But I'm sure baby will come before that! GL mama!

  • I know a mother who delivered at 43 weeks, with a midwife in a hospital-based birth center. I don't know how different things would be with a homebirth. Good luck! Hopefully LO will decide to show his face soon, and you won't have to worry about it.

Keeping you in my thoughts - hang in there! BTW, I love his name. DH and I plan on naming one of ours Keegan some day, ourselves. :)

  • I asked this of my CNMs (hospital team) and they said you just had to sign a waiver and you could go forever.  Not sure if that affects insurance coverage though...
