Baby coming home under 4lbs?

Hi everyone, There is talk of my twins coming home within the next week. They are both doing very well. My son is 5lb, 1oz, my daughter is 3lbs 11oz. I'm worried that she is not over 4lbs, this may be too soon... Anyone have a baby that came home just under 4? We have the keyfit 30's and obviously they have to pass the car seat tests but they also mentioned about the possibility of a car bed?

Re: Baby coming home under 4lbs?

  • Camryn came home at just around 4 lbs. We did have to get a new car seat for her. I think it was a safety first one. The NICU did have a thing where you could rent a car bed...

  • If I remember right one of our NICU going home requirements was being at least 4 lbs...
  • Gabe came home at 4lb1oz.  They did his car seat test before he was 4lb, but he wasn't allowed to come home until he was 4lbs because that is the car seat minimum.  No car seats on the market go below 4lbs.  You'd have to get a car bed for that.

Apparently it's not here?? I thought this was the minimum also... but according to doctor because they are doing so well, insurance may not cover them being here a few extra days and if she is still under 4lbs they are probably going to make us get a car bed...

I thought it would be a huge deal to have him come home so small.  It wasn't.  Don't worry too much.  3lb11oz is so close to 4lb.  Just a heads up, Gabe wore preemie clothes for weeks after he came home.

We purchased some clothes already and she is wearing them here. I just talked to the nurse (I stay here in the maternity ward, which is a nice perk for all the moms/dads with kids in special care- not an insurance thing just complimentary). She said we may be able to buy a couple of days if we move Allison to the regular nursery! So I will talk to the doctor about that so she can hopefully get to 4lbs before discharge or insurance decides to screw us over!

  • It might not be a big deal if she's a little under 4 lbs, but I think it would kinda freak me out a bit.  I would rather she be a little bit bigger for my own peace of mind.  I hope they'll let you move her to the nursery.

P.S. I love your new siggy pic!!

That's great! I'd be a little freaked out, too. They're so little! The nurses bought me some time for me to get set up to be on an apnea monitor here (not that it needs much of a set up - just, totally different story). Anyway, they are our best advocates! It's really awesome that they've done so well they can come home.

  • They started talking about Wesley coming home today too - sometime probably next week - so I talked to them about the seats and everything since he is only 3lbs 9oz currently.  They said that we could also do the car bed if he doesn't pass the carseat test.  The bed is sold in the gift shop and by the NICU as well - and they are only around 50 bucks.  We have the keyfit 30, and then also got the peg perego seat as well.  We will see what happens - he has to be able to take more feedings by mouth first - which he has been doing pretty well all day today! YAY!

So exciting to hear that you guys are so close to coming home!  Let me know if you decide to get the car bed and what you think about it!

  • We had to get the S1 by Safety 1st because the Chicco didn't fit them size wise. The S1 had an extra crotch strap that made it so they wouldn't slide down into the seat as bad. It is rated 4lbs and up. Check a multiples group nearby, too, ours in WA had carbeds that you could use for free (same with preemie clothes, carseats, etc).

  • I'm late to post but did want to mention that my DD was allowed to come home at 3 lbs 14 oz. We did have to see the pedi the next day, and again two days later, to make sure she was gaining appropriately at home.

  • My LO's were 4 pounds 6 ounces and 4 pounds 1 ounces when they left the SCN. It was a requirement of the hospital that they were 4 pounds to be discharged. We did have to purchase a car bed because one of my LO's failed the car seat challenge. I have a car bed that we are no longer using if you would like it. You can send me an email, mlpolin@yahoo.com
