Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How long does your DC cry before naps?

After sleep training both my girls go down at night without any crying and sleep through the night.

NAPS are another story --- they are a nightmare (daymare??).  I used all the same steps as nighttime, adjusted times, etc.  There are days when they cry through the whole nap even though they are obviously SOOO tired.  DD2 only stays asleep for about 20 minutes.  My nanny claims to be following my directions, but .........?

Any suggestions? Or how long does your DC cry before falling asleep?

  • About 5-10 minutes before every nap, then he'll sleep for an hour-two hours. I don't consider it a nap unless it's an hour. I used the extinction method after reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. The morning nap is around 9, and the afternoon nap is around 1. I found that setting set nap times/bed time really helped naps and nighttime sleep.

  • I agree with setting sleep times, ours are the same time everyday and it made a hige improvement with bed time, just wish it had the same effect during the day.

It doesn't help that DD1 poops immediately after being laid down for a nap.  Seriously, it's like clock work.

This.  DD used to cry 5-10 minutes like this, but she hasn't cried at all once I've left the room for months now (and often goes down happy and doesn't cry at all).  I've followed Healthy Sleep Habits as if it were a religion since she was 8 weeks old, if that helps.

  • Have you tried darkening the room?  What is your naptime routine?

For us, I rock/sway him for a few moments and then lay him in his crib.  He goes to sleep usually without crying but the longest he cries is two minutes.  If he cries anymore than that it means he pooped and he does that a lot....little stinker...literally.

  • None? I'm not a CIO/sleep training person. It's great for some people, but it's not for me. She let's me know when she's tired and I'll rock her until she falls asleep and then out her down. She sleeps like a dream. 12hrs at night, 2-3 hrs for a nap midday.

  • We JUST started putting DD down for naps in her crib - yes, I know, super late. But we loved cuddling with her when she slept. Now that she's no longer on bottles though (she fell asleep either nursing or with a bottle), we decided to put her down in her crib. At first? It was awful - about 15 minutes (with me going to check on her after about 10). Now, it's closer to about 5 minutes, but she's not happy about it at all. Sorry I don't have suggestions to make it better.

Sometimes he falls asleep right away and sometimes it can take a few minutes of fussing. That is true for nights as well.

Trust me -- I NEVER thought I'd be a sleep training person either, but until you find yourself nursing twins ALL.NIGHT.LONG because they won't go to sleep/stay asleep by themselves.....well, I had to do something!!

Anyway, my schedule is as follows

    Wake - 6:15, Nap - 8:00, Nap - 1:00, Bed - 7:00ish
