another bday s/o-menus?

What's everyone doing for food?  We're having Liam's party at our house Memorial Day weekend, and I'm hoping to have it outside.  There will probably be around 25-30 people, mostly adults with probably 5 or so kids. It will be at 4pm.

My goal is to have to do as little as possible in terms of food prep on the actual day of the party, I hate having to run around trying to get everything ready on the same day.  what are your plans?

  • I haven't decided yet, but it seems like the perfect time of year to have a cookout!  I will most likely grill hot dogs and burgers and have some simple sides like salads, fruit, and chips.

We are doing a cook-out style lunch.

Hamburgers, hot dogs and brat patties- I am going to ask my dad to be grill chef so DH can be helping me.

Sides will be classics like: potato salad, maccaroni salad, watermelon, baked beans, a salad, chips and dip, etc.

I plan on either making it all ahead of time for the cold stuff or putting it in crock pots for the warm stuff.  Keeping me able to be with DD and not stuck in the kitchen.  I want to enjoy the day too and I know she will get crabby and overwhelmed if I'm not there and she is just getting passed around.

  • This is all totally up in the air, but I have this planned so far.  And, it's a lot, so I know I'll be cutting back and simplfying.  Our theme is Very Hungry caterpillar so I want to incorporate the foods he eats somehow.  Some will be obvious, some will be subtle (piece of lettuce = green salad)

    MENU:

    Appetizers:

    -          Meat and cheese platter

    -          Chips and salsa

    Main Meal:

    -          Burger sliders and fixings

    -          Hot Dogs & Brats

    -          Fruit salad (apples, pears, plums, strawberries, oranges ? in watermelon? include others!)

    -          Green salad

    -          Pasta salad

    -          Veggie Platter

    Drinks:

    -          Soda, Water, Beer

    -          Wine and Sangria

    -          Lemonade

    -          Some kind of frozen drink

    Dessert:

    -          Cupcake cake ? caterpillar head is chocolate cake, and the caterpillar body is vanilla cupcakes and green frosting

    -          Ice cream bar, complete with cones and cherries for on top!

    -          Gummy worms

    -          Smash Cake ? rainbow cake in varying shades of green?

  • See, I thought about grilling, but I didn't want DH stuck at the grill all day.  Although I guess since it's a bday party, people will be getting there all at one time & he'd only have to grill once, so it might not be bad (we do a luau party every year & the first year he grilled....it was such a pain because it's a casual party, so people were coming & going all afternoon...I don't think he was ever able to leave the grill!)

  • My first thought was further supported by you uncertainty of grilling - how about pulled pork in the crock pot? Make it all before, cook overnight and it's ready the day of!

  • Tentatively, I'm thinking this:

Probably a veggie/cheese etc tray to munch on beforehand

BBQ Pulled Chicken w/assorted buns for sandwiches
    Homemade Mac & Cheese
A big salad full of good stuff and a yummy dressing lol
    Fruit
    Maybe some assorted chips

Homemade Vanilla Bean Cake and Strawberry Cupcakes
Assorted color-themed sweets on the table w/the cake

    Pink Lemonade
    Water
    Whatever other beverages

  • I was thinking about doing Shredded BBQ chicken or sloppy joe sandwiches in the crock pot. That way I can prep ahead of time and no one has to worry about grilling.

We'll also have a fruit and veggie tray and some covered dishes (potato casserole, etc). I'm pretty sure my mom, sis and MIL will all volunteer to help with these items.

    Cake

    Drinks

I'm hoping not to have to worry about food to much the day of. We will be busy enough hauling everything to the picnic shelter, setting up, etc.

  • We are having Liams ;) party which is Dr. seuss, so we are having Deviled eggs (green eggs) and ham rolls, Pasta salad (Oodles of Noodles), Goldfish (One Fish, Two Fish), Turkey sandwich ring, Dip and Chips, Chicken Salad Sandwichs (my mom's and is great) and Fruit on skewers (Truffula Trees).

Then we have cupcakes, and DS cake.  As little snacks we are having popcorn, marshmellow pops and a candy buffet.

Genius! We might do this too.

  • We are doing 6ft long sandwiches from a deli, chips, fruit, and veggies. Easy peasy. :)
