Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

1 year old weight

What is the weight everyone's LOs now, Alex is just over 13mos, at his 1 year well check he was only 19lbs 6oz and about 31 inches tall.  He was my biggest born and my smallest at 1 Dr wants me to try and "fatten" him up a little.  He is by far not a picky eater, he will eat everything.  He is on whole milk, any advice to try and get him to gain a little bit of weight would be greatly appreciated he has to go back for a weight check on 4/6.

  • DD has the same stats as your little guy.  I think she lost an ounce from her 9mo to 1 yr check-up.  Dr didn't seemed concerned.

  • At 28 months, my daughter is only 24 pounds. (I know I'm jumping over to this boardWink )  We took my daughter to a nutritionist. She went over good foods and eating habits and how to deal with toddler eating issues. And at the end, she said to me that every kid is different. As long as they have energy and are happy, that's what matters. She never once told me to "fatten" my kid up. But she did just stress the importance of providing variety and such. What she explained to me mostly is that for so long people have been looking at percentile charts from the CDC, which is incorrect for current times, but really we should be looking at charts for the World Health Organization (WHO) for birth-24 months. The reasoning is here: https://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/who_charts.htm . I would ask your pedi which charts they are looking at. Reading through the reasoning and seeing my skinny daughter on the WHO chart quelled all my fears about her weight.

I'm actually shocked that they would try to get you to fatten him up.  DS was just barely 20 lbs and 32.5" tall at exactly 12 months old (we had the appt on his birthday).  He also had ear infections most of the winter and spring and he was back in the doctor's office for an ear recheck and was down to 19 lbs 1 oz at 13 months old.  The doctor never said anything to get him to fatten up.  DS was 10 lbs 22" at birth (39 weeks) so he was a HUGE baby.  He didn't get back up to 20 lbs until about 14.5 months old.  He lost 1 lb 4 oz after he was born and they only time we had weight checks were the first month since it took him almost the entire month to get back up to his birthweight.  I guess with us, they figured that he just gains weight slowly (we even did the weigh before and after nursing sessions and he was getting plenty) and he metabolizes really quickly.  Now at 2 he's only 26 lbs but he's also 37.5".

  • My DD was around 14 lbs at 12 months. She didnt reach 20 lbs until her 2nd birthday. DS was a little bit bigger (around 18 lbs at 12 months). They were plenty healthy.

If your son is otherwise thriving (and it sounds like he is), then I wouldn't necessarily be concerned with "fattening" him up. Not all babies/toddlers are meant to be chubby.

  • My daughter was similar stats, and the only reason my doctor was concerned is because her growth curve is going down.  She went from 55th to 23rd percentile in 3 months, though her height stayed similar (75-77).  He suggested that we offer Pediasure once a day, since she was eating well, and a good variety.

  • At her 9 month appointment she was 21 lbs 4 oz. Her 1 year appointment is in a couple of weeks. I weighed her on my own recently, and it doesn't look like she has gained anything at this point, but I guess we'll find out for sure soon.

She's been dropping in %ile slowly but surely since 6 months. She went from 95th to 90th to 75th. The pedi hasn't been concerned, so we'll see what this next appointment brings.

  • That weight sounds just fine. My DD was 17 pounds at 12 months and the pedi was worried and had tests done, but everything came back normal. Just feed him healthy, fat foods. Healthy snacks instead of packaged snacks that have no nutrition. ETA: My DD is only 20 pounds now at 18 months.

  • DD was 20 lbs. Which for a little girl at 12 mos is "25% - 50% percentile" according to the Pedi. She's 31 inches which is 90th percentile. The pedi was happy with her weight.

I work at a DC and have seen some LO's who were having trouble putting on weight at 1 year. The only thing different that they did (that I knew of) was continue on formula past 1 year.

  • As long as your lo is getting a variety of foods and eating well, I'm not sure I'd be worried either, like pp's said. I've had 4 of mine off the charts at the top end (ie ds was 34lbs 34", S 27lbs 32"), and one not (E 18lbs 30"). Between 1 and 2, none of my dks put on weight (except E, she put on 3 lbs), so even the chubsters thinned out, it's normal. And for a lighter lo, to have a stall in gain isn't unheard of, toddlers are far more active now than they were as babies.
  • At one year, my LO was 22lbs 9oz and 28in long.

  • Has your DS always been around the same percentile or has he been dropping? If he's always been smaller, then I don't see the problem. My DS barely hit 20 lbs. at his 1 year appt (and he was 8 when he was born so he didn't triple his weight or whatever) but there was no concern because from his 2 month appointment on, he was always in the 15th or so percentile.
  • DS was 8 lbs 15 oz at birth but only 18 lbs 9 oz at 1 year. He seems to have gone through a growth spurt and I think he's over 21 lbs now going by our scale at home (not sure how it will compare to the doctor's scale). His 15 month appointment isn't until the 27th, though, so we'll see. I feel like he started gaining more once we went from BM to WCM. He was always on his curve but only gained 1 lb from 9-12 months and now I think he's gained more like 3 lbs since 12 months.

  • DD was 19.5 lbs and 29 inches at her 15 month appointment. We're not worried. She hasn't dropped off of either curve. She's small like her parents.
  • She was 16 pounds 13 ounces and 28.5 inches long at 12 months.
  • DD1 was 21lbs at 12 months. I don't remember how tall. DD2 was a little under 20lbs at 13 months...31 inches. Why would the doctor want to fatten him up? All the doctors that I've tallked to like how my children are (long and lean).

  • My daughter was 19lbs 3oz at her 12 month check, but it has always been emphasized to me that raw weight isn't really what's important, it's more important that they continue to follow their particular curve.  I don't think 19 lbs in and of itself is cause for concern, but If your son dropped off his curve, that could be why your pedi was alerted.

I would second avocado and full fat dairy.  DD gained more than usual between 12 and 13 months and I'm pretty sure it's because I stopped pumping and we switched her to whole milk while I'm at work.

. The reasoning is here: https://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/who_charts.htm . I would ask your pedi which charts they are looking at. Reading through the reasoning and seeing my skinny daughter on the WHO chart quelled all my fears about her weight.

According to those charts, my DD - 22 mo, 22 lbs and 30" - is 7% for weight and  not on the chart for height.

Interesting because when I look at the other chart, she is under 5% for both height & weight.

  • OP, my 21-monther was almost exactly the same weight and height as your LO at our weight check last week.  I think that at 12 months she was around 15 lbs?  I can't really remember.

We've had the most success getting her to gain by adding Carnation Instant Breakfast to all of her WCM.  We use the sugar-free chocolate flavor.  We also incorporate a lot of olive oil, butter, and/or cream cheese in her meals.

  • 19 lbs. At 14 months she's almost 20 lbs. She's actually my big baby.

My older daughter was 16 lbs at a year, and her dr was a little concerned. He sent me to a pedi out of town who was not worried at all. We now go to the latter pedi because he seems to know what he's talking about.

I would not worry at all about him being 19 lbs. I also wouldn't try to "fatten him up". Maybe get a second opinion if your pedi is still concerned.

  • 26 lb and 14 oz.  She has been off the charts since she was two months old and still off.  I asked my pedi at our checkup what would be a more average weight for a one year old girl, and she told me about 21-22 lbs according to their growth charts.

DS was 20.5 lbs.at 1 year well visit.

I wouldn't really worry too much about him being smaller than your other LO's at the same age. My DD was  alot smaller than my DS at birth, then exploded as an infant and was off the charts in weight, much bigger than he was as an infant, then by her first birthday she started to level off and now its looking like she will have the same EXACT stats as my son for her 2 year well visit, which were 26.5 lbs and 33 inches tall. Your son might go through a big growth spurt in the coming months.
