OBGYN says I'm a perfect candidate for a VBAC so that is what we have planned all along. Today I had to sign the consent form and was reading through all of the possible risks, and although I really want to give birth vaginally, it kind of freaked me out...
Anyone else having any reservations about a VBAC? I still want to try for it, but am now just a little more worried than before.
Anyone have unsuccessful VBAC attempts?
or Success stories to share to make me feel better?
Re: Looking for reassurance.. repost from 3rd tri
For me the risks involved with a RCS are more worrisome than the risks of a VBAC. Plus I don't like the fact that I had a c/s to be the only reason to have one this time--I've had a very healthy pregnancy (minus an appendectomy at 32 weeks) and have absolutely no interest in going through major abdominal surgery again. I can't wait to be able to pick up and play with my 30 lb son without pain.
It is totally normal to worry about the risk of VBAC at times. I certainly had moments during my pregnancy where I played that what if game. But keep in mind that RCS also has potentially serious risks, like a 3x increased risk of maternal death, as well as the risk of potentially deadly complications in future pregnancies (ie placenta previa and placenta accreta). It is not as if one is dangerous and one is safe. If those VBAC consent forms do not also discuss the risks of RCS, they are being misleading.
I had a wonderful healthy VBAC with my son and no regrets about my choice. Check out the birth stories page on the VBAC Bumpies blog if you want to read some VBAC and RCS stories.
Don't forget, before you go in for your c-section, you have to sign a release that is FAR worse then the VBAC release. Death, paralysis, hysterectomy and lots of other really fun things. Just remember, these are drawn up by lawyers to protect the hospital/doctor.
It's very normal to be nervous about the birth process. Regardless of how the baby arrives, there are risks.
You'll be fine!! Good luck.
I did a TON of research on vbac vs rcs and it was very clear that vbac is the safer option for me and my baby. The research on rcs and cs made me VERY upset and guilty that I allowed my OB to schedule me for a cs the first time with little reason. Ultimately the choice is yours, but the research was pretty clear to me. My OB (that I fired) has obviously not read the same research or just doesn't care.
In my area it's difficult to have a hospital vbac so we ended up switching to a home birth MW, but as long as you educate yourself and ask questions you can give it a good shot. The best advice I got while planning a hospital vbac was to ask the doctor or nurse if we could have a minute to discuss with my husband. My fear was not being able to tell a real life or death emergency vs a made up emergency like the "your baby is too big to fit through your vagina" BS I got the first time.
