I think someone asked about this not too long ago but I couldn't find the post, sorry.
So, we bedshare and I've noticed that early in the morning DS gets really restless and wakes up almost every half a ahour to every hour and most of the time not to nurse he just seems uncomfortable. I posted this and the response I got was that maybe the light coming in or my husband getting up disturbs him. I try changing that and it still happened. Since the last couple days I've noticed that DS is more uncomfortable and even crying at times, he turns and tries to get on his belly but he seems not to be able to settle. I woke up fully to pay attention and he seems to be trying to pass gas, once he does he seems to be able to settle a little bit more.
So two questions here then; one, is it ok for him to sleep on his tummy while bedsharing? And two, can he be having gas pains and how do I help him? TIA
Re: Bedsharing and tummy sleep?
One: Yes, as long as he is able to and has the room to turn himself over. At nine months, the major risk of belly sleep has passed. If he's more comfortable that way, let him! I couldn't imagine rolling my DS over every time he flipped onto his belly when he was 9 months! Belly sleep may also help gas pains.
Two: I'd look into his diet and see if there is anything that makes him more gassy. You can look at the big things (broccoli, beans, dairy. . .) first and just kind of track what he eats and how bad the gas is that night, then if you see a correlation, eliminate that food from his diet. You can try gas drops or gripe water, but they never did a thing for my little one. You could also look into doing the I Love You massage if he will let you. Mine wouldn't past about 6 months, but it did help him prior to that.
Hope he feels better soon!
This! Don't worry about him sleeping on his tummy anymore.
As for the gas issues, I got nothing. My younger son will wake up a ton at night if he hasn't pooped in a few days (TMI!). We do feed him prunes with yogurt on a regular basis, which seems to help. If he's just starting out with solids, make sure he's getting some water with meals, too, because that can help with digestion. hth
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
My little guy does this exact thing. It's like he knows he has to pee/poo but he doesn't want to do it in his sleep or in our bed, but he is also not able to wake himself. 9 times out of 10 when he starts squirming like this, if I pick him up to take him to the bathroom, he has a loooong pee and/or poop lined up. I used to think it was gas but I realize now it is just him needing to relieve himself!
