at 2.5 years old, do I just let him CIO??

DS is 2.5 and is easy to put down to bed, and STTN with no problems, until the past week or so. Now within a few minutes of putting him down, and once during the night, he cries and cries and comes up with a reason to get us back in his room, usually to fix his blanket, or he dropped his stuffed animal, sometimes for another kiss or hug. If I could have seen where this was going, I would have ignored him the first few times, but he always went down without a problem, I thought there must have been something wrong.

Just now for his nap I tried to ignore him, and he got very worked up and ultimately I didn't want him to wake the baby, so I went in to quiet him down after 15 minutes.

How can I stop this? (He is still in a crib)

  • DS went through a phase for about two weeks where we had to rock him to sleep like we did when he was a baby (which we hadn't done for well over a year!). I tried to let him CIO but it just ended in disaster.  He also wouldn't go down for naps.

I don't really have any advice other than I can commiserate.

  • We just went through the SAME thing... this is what worked for us (seriously!).

We went through the normal bedtime routine but when it was time to go to the crib I told DS, "When Mommy leaves, don't cry, okay? I'll come check on you, but you need to go to sleep."

As crazy as it sounds, that little reminder has been all that he has needed for the past week or so. He hasn't thrown his stuffed animal or jumped around screaming in his crib. Miracles!!

Try it... it just may work!

This worked for us too...for tears.  Like, remember when mommy leaves you don't need to cry.  It does sound strange, but it worked for us. When it was the sftall bedtime tactics we would go in the first time and ask him to tell us all he needed and then leave by saying we weren't going to come back.

OMG, this works for me, too.  DS is just shy of 2.5 and generally goes to bed easily.  We recently moved him to a twin mattress on the floor (we need the crib for baby #2) so now he has the freedom to get up.  Well, I read a few books with him, then I get up and tell him "Mama has to go but it is time for you to go to sleep.  You stay in bed and I'll come back in a little bit to check on you" and it works!

  • Thanks, I'll try that tonight!
