1st Trimester

horseradish ?

I just had a sandwich with boar's head horseradish sauce...then looked online and many pregnancy websites said to steer clear of horseradish.  Has anyone heard from the dr. that you cannot eat this during pregnancy?

Re: horseradish ?

  • I crave horseradish and wasabi (which is really just green horseradish most of the time).  In the first trimester, all I could eat was avocado and cream cheese "sushi" with a ton of wasabi and soy.  My baby is still doing great and I've told my doctor in passing the one craving I've had.  She expressed no concerns.

Oh that sounds so good right now!!  :)  I love asparagus and cream cheese "sushi" too.  Oh how I miss my tuna nigiri, though!

  • I only really think it could become an issue if you ate it constantly or in great amounts. That's true of a lot of the foods that you are told to avoid, I would think. It's more like you're supposed to avoid it because you don't want to "poison" yourself with TOO MUCH of something that could potentially be harmful, but in small amounts you probably have nothing to worry about (most places I've read about avoiding horseradish say to avoid eating it frequently/heavily). And then there's some of it that's off the "okay" list just because you don't want to tempt fate (like with lunch meats and listeria, or parasites from sushi; it's rare, but since you have the choice not to take the risk, they suggest you don't take it). I've read from lots of women saying they ate horseradish/sushi/lunch meats throughout their pregnancy with no issues.

Personally, before I found out I was pregnant I had nigiri sushi (with wasabi) a couple of times, but I'm not really concerned.  I'm avoiding it NOW (a shame, because I love the raw sushi) but in general you have nothing to worry about if you happen to have eaten a "no-no" food on accident here and there. I honestly doubt there is much of anything (food-wise) that can be disastrous in small amounts.

I've never heard of that, and always use horseradish mayo on my roast beef sandwiches.

    Will continue to do so.
