Unexplained fevers

DS had a very high fever last Tuesday (over 105F) that wasn't controlled by medication and was only reduced (to 102F) by IV fluids.  All labs came back normal and we were sent home with his fever at 102F.  Since then he hasn't really gotten rid of the fever...his temp has been above normal for the last 12 days.  I attributed this low grade fever to teething (he's getting his molars) but again today it started to spike (103F when I took him in).  They have tested him for all kinds of fever causing things (flu, rsv, ears, strep, uti) and concluded he doesn't seem sick enough (he's consolable) for meningitis.

His blood work came back abnormal today and they want to repeat it at his primary care dr. on Monday to see if the levels are normal again.  Anyone have this issue?

Re: Unexplained fevers

  • Yikes.. no I haven't had that issue. I do know from working in a school district that unexplained extremely high fevers have been popular this year.

Nonetheless, it is scary and I hope you get an answer or whatever is it will go away soon so your LO can return to normal. I am sure it's been rough.

  • I know you say that he doesn't seem sick enough for meningitis, but it's very surprising to me that they have not done a lumbar puncture yet.

  • I'm of those people who do not think fevers should be associated with teething, so I obviously don't think it's teething. Personally, I would push for all tests possible. Especially if meningitis has crossed your mind. My BIL had it when he was an infant. It caused vision problems for him.

The only time my son had an unexplained fever was after his surgery. It wasn't an infection that they could find. But it ended up breaking when we were going on the 4th day.
