Anyone have a light grey or tan carpeting/fabric seats in car?

How does it fare with kids?

We've had black carpeting and fabric seats in our car since we've had kids, but we're planning to buy a new (probably new to us) family vehicle in the next few weeks.  I'm not finding many with the black interior option, which to be honest we've loved.

It seems like it's mostly light grey and tan with a few charcoal grey, and I'm wondering how much that would show the kid grime.  I'd really like leather, but we're probably not going to be getting it unless we run across an amazing deal.

  • H has light fabric seats and they're awful looking. A cpl months ago he spent the money on a professional cleaning and it helped a lot.  My car is leather which cleans easy.  I will only buy leather interior for future cars. I think with all of the money spent detailing the inside over the years it's the same cost as buying the leather w/o the headache.

  • I have light gray and they look bad.  I suppose if I was more diligent about things they'd look a little better, but really I have enough to think about without stressing over stuff falling in the car, or tracking dirt in.  I want to get them professionally cleaned, but then I wonder why bother.
  • I have light gray seats and they aren't looking so great. I keep thinking I'm going to get them professionally cleaned and then put the seat saver things under each carseat but we'll see if that' actually happens. The carpet is a nice chocolate milk color in spots :(

My passenger seat isn't good either, it's had more coffee spilled on it than I care to admit.

I probably won't truly worry about it until we go to sell it which could be never. I love my car.

  • A few months back DH bought me a RR SUV with a light tan interior.  My previous car had tan seats as well.  My previous car had hardly no damage (surprisingly) considering how often DD ate and played inside.  We bought my old car a week before she was born and had it up until we got the new SUV.  That car's interior should have been way worse off than it was but somehow it wasn't; probably because my husband was more diligent than I was about getting it cleaned regularly.  With the new SUV, I've set the standard that there is absolutely NO eating in the car.  At 4 years old, she's still a little clumsy, doesn't always pay attention to what she's doing and often tries to do several things at once and accidents occur often.  Getting her not to eat in the car was difficult at first since she'd always eaten in my old car but eventually, she caught on.  I'm also much better about getting my car cleaned so everything looks good.  So, it takes a little bit of an effort but lighter interiors can be worked with.

PS: Not sure what type of vehicle you're looking for (we were in the SUV market) but if that's what you're looking for, I know for sure the Jeeps have a black interior and I believe the Ford Explorers do too. (Those were really cool; there's a Wi-Fi hot spot included!)

  • We have the tan color in one of our cars.  It gets dirty very easily obviously especially in the winter with muddy wet boots.

  • we have light tan leather seats and they look great. I'm horrible about cleaning them too. So if you go w/ light colored, get leather! My car is 6 years old and the inside looks just fine. No scratches or any stains on the leather at all.

We also have the winter mud mats on the floor and keep them there year round for the girls.

  • We have a Corolla with grey fabric seats. I definitely shows the dirt, though it's not too bad. There's some dirt in the small space between the 2 car seats, and on the back of the drivers chair, where DS can reach with his feet. We're selling the car soon so we'll have to clean it really well; here's hoping it cleans well enough!

Both of our cars have grey cloth interior and I think they look fine. The only part of either car that ever gets to looking nasty is the floor, but they have cloth floormats, which we just hose off.
  • I have leather interior. But we have a fabric cover on the back seat where the kids sit and it is light grey to match the leather interior light grey. It is stained from the kids, but it is a cover, so once they are older, I will take it off and throw it away. I have cleaned it a couple of times, so it doesn't look so bad right now. I originally bought it before we had kids because we had dogs and I didn't want their toenails gouging my new leather seats. It is the best thing I ever bought, because it has taken care of all the kids messes as well. I think we spent $100 on it, but is it is custom made to fit our exact back seat (Honda Pilot) like a glove. I know you can buy a cover that is a one size fits all for cheaper. I recommend anyone getting a new car with young children get a cover, it may seem like a lot in the beginning, but it will save you so much money in detailing your interior later or losing resale on the car because the interior is all stained. My DH took the cover off last year to clean it and my seats look like it just came off the showroom floor and my car is 7 years old.

    Buy a cover, period!

  • we have tan leather and tan interior (carpets/door panels, etc).  it had held up really well.  that being said, ds doesn't drink anything other than water in the car and has dry snacks....so there really isn't much reason for a mess.

the only thing that gets a bit dirty is the back of the drivers seat when ds kicks it from his car seat, but it is always able to be cleaned.

  • I have tan cloth interior and I just asked DH about this as he always complains about my messy van, but we both agree that the seats look fine.  That they are not stained or abnormally dirty at all.  And we have two 3 year olds so I don't know..... I don't think it's a big deal.
