Re: Sinead

  • Thanks to Sinead O'Connor, a lot of Americans know how to pronounce it (well, I'm 32 so maybe people who were younger don't know who she is).  I think it is a little strange if one doesn't have any Irish background to use such a Gaelic name, but if you like it, go for it.

  • I think it is odd that you would think people would be unfamiliar with this name, but I also think it is a little odd if you use it and don't have any Irish background.
  • Oh my grandmother was actually irish so there is some heritage there, forgot to mention that

  • I think, because of Sinead O'Connor, that most people will be able to pronounce the name.

  • I think most people know how to pronounce it (Sinead O'connor), at least people who are already about 25 and older..

You must be new to this board. Doesn't matter if you ask if someone likes it...they will tell you anyway. lol (And on that note, I don't like it either.)

I think most people will know how to pronounce it because of Sinead O'Connor. I don't really understand what you mean by "usable".

  • Not a fan of the name but most people should know how to pronounce it courtesy of Sinead O'Connor, as others have stated....

  • Any name is usable in America--but I don't like the name, nor do I instinctively know how to pronounce it.
  • I've never heard of Sinead O'Conner.  Neither has DH. I just asked him. And he had no clue how to pronounce it. If you told me the origins of the name first I would pronounce it correctly. If not, I would have pronounced it wrong.

If you corrected me once though, I would remember. I don't think pronunciation should be a big deal after the first time.

Yea, this. Sorry, it's a baby name board, people WILL give their opinion no matter what. Expect it. Take it however you want, but don't get your panties in a twist over it, no one was mean to you.

I think people can pronounce it and especially after being corrected once or twice. With that said, I'm not a fan, not a very attractive name IMO an Sinead O'Connor doesn't do it any wonders.

    GL deciding!!

  • I've heard of Sinead O'Connor, but still immediately pronounced the name wrong when I saw it. I honestly read sin need. I'm usually really good with pronunciations, but I still read it entirely wrong. I'm going to use Avonlea for our girl if we have one, pronounced Avunlee. But I know people will read it wrong. They will just have to be corrected, lol. People read and pronounce even simple names wrong.
