Excercising and Breastfeeding??

My DD is 9 months old and still bf-ing, I am a working mom and I want to REALLY get back into shape. I heard that exercising can change the taste of the milk for the baby? Is that true? Will excercising also slow my production or change it at all?

I just feel SO out of shape, ugh! I've been eating alot to keep the calories up but it's really starting to take it's toll. I definitelty weigh more now than after I had my DD? I just want to fit nicely in my old cloths.

 Need advice. TIA

  • I would just go slow...I adding in more walks and such but never got back to running (it was more because it hurt by boobs too badly!).  I noticed a bit of a dip around 9 months but think it was more hormonal than exercise related.

  • Very intense exercise can slightly change the taste of milk for the baby, but it's not dangerous to the baby, and the effect passes in 1-2 hours. It does not affect your supply.

That said, I did use a potential supply decrease as an excuse to not exercise regularly during the period when I was pumping at work Smile. My supply was never the greatest to start with, and it usually dropped when I was under stress, so I figured exercise could affect it. Plus, I just didn't have time.

But I did exercise regularly while on maternity leave, and I've been training for a half-marathon while nursing over the past few months, with no issues.

I certainly wouldn't let breastfeeding stop you if you do want to start exercising again! Worst case scenario, you can back off if it seems to affect breastfeeding... but unless you're planning to train for the Olympics, you'll probably be just fine Wink
